My new attempt after watching this video. I try to give more energy and loose lines to my sketches, but now they look more messy 🤔

In my second attempt, I felt much more confident with my work. Aligning the eyes using the plumb lines and the measuring unit gave me a greater sense of assurance in accurately placing the eyes and the rest of the features.

I choose Dave Malan. I think there is beauty in Simplicity, I love the simple yet elegant style of his line drawings.
I am wondering, if the homework is to copy an artist is it okay to take some liberties? I wanted to add eye lashes to the right eye, even though Dave Malan did not.

the point is to study their lifework ,so you can take as many liberties as long as you are learning about their line art

I did a different drawing. I'll do the tracing exercise later. This is very important and something Ive been working on for a while. Im not at all confident and would love different opinions . thanks.

Your critiques are lessons upon lessons upon lessons! These projects and your comments revealed my reliance on observation and contour married to perfectionism. This is helping to eliminate my internal angst when drawing. Thanks for your eye opening feedback Stan😳
Here is a thank you gift for you Stan- The Dot and the Line; 1965 movie version so you don’t have to read the book😂 https://youtu.be/h0yf7IkWceI
I am a blue line…you are gently training me to be a versatile line by choice! A big shout out to Marshall too!

I love this,I got the book too. I think I came across it because of one of the draftsman's videos.Did Marshall mention it?

now that they're all up they look a bit basic and unimaginative. I should try again

Tried the assignment and like my last assignment my issue is the proportions. Other than that, I had fun doing this assignment.

I tried just simplifying the bigger shapes and not including the smaller ones. I'll probably do these again tomorrow.

These little buggers will be haunting my dreams tonight.
I post the new drawing attempt and the photo reference. Is there anyone who can give me some advice?

Helloo, my 3rd attempt at level 2 portrait after seeing the demo. The image looks better on paper than in the scan :P

Thats always the case. Every time I think I did well a photo will point out all the errors.

Definitely excited for this assignment, can I practice doing some fire flowers and Yoshi eggs too? Those have simple ellipses. Even the Koopas have some great elliptical forms. I'm still gunna go back to my previous level 2 assignment and simplify it once more, wanna give it one more shot again.

post them please. I think those are great ideas. It would be really good to have choices. I'd like to make warmups routine

I wanted to try something that's very different from what I'm used to. Colour. So I tried to draw still life I found the reference online. Used markers. Not yet sure how to use them properly so rendering may be hit and miss really. Attempted to combine a little bit with white pastel pencil, it seems to kind of work. Will experiment further.

are they alcohol markers? you need to give them a second pass. I like how you colored the shadows on the pitcher. Thats how to use them. Layer the colors, it feels like painting.

Stan, you've clearly explained how we can use only 5 values (3 in the lights and 2 in the shadows) to indicate the form of a single object but, when we are faced with multiple objects that have different local values, how do we use those same 5 values to describe their forms if we want to show their local value differences?
I keep finding my erasers melt the paint off of drawing pencils. It happened with all brands of erasers, the last offenders were prismacolors magic rub erasers . Anyone have good tips on how to clean them efficiently?

My attempt at the portrait. I wanted to push some shapes to create the details with sticking to flat values. Never tried anything like this before (well except for the pears). Any feed back? Also included a in progress picture.

I think he looks very cool. I only started his drawing but haven't finished it. I can tell it will be worth repeating. For sure,I like it. Especially the hair. VERY nice.
