Pear Critiques are here! Critique for the portraits coming Thursday, but I recommend level 2 students watch this critique video too. I give advice and demonstrate things that should be useful to both levels.

Hello everyone~ I hope this post finds everyone well! I just recently finished the level 1 assignment on Simplify Pear from Observation. I would sincerely appreciate some feedback on how I did on this assignment. I took some time to critique myself, reviewing the demo and the critique video. Here are some things I found wrong with my drawing. I also included an image showing where I think these mistakes were made: —- The angle of the top of the pear is incorrect —- The corner of the top half of the pair on the right is too low compared to that on the left. (It should be a bit higher). —- I made the stem too light. I believe it is missing shadows. —- I feel like I didn’t simplify the shapes of the shadows and the lights enough, making them feel random. I think part of the problem is that I tend to focus too much on details and don’t know how to tackle this bad habit. —- I also felt the drawing didn’t have any focal point. —- Missing more highlights —- I'm a little unsure if my values are correct as well. —- I still need to work on my proportions Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong regarding the mistakes I just mentioned. Additionally, please let me know what other areas I need to improve, as well as any other errors or bad habits that I may have overlooked. I will redraw this image of the pear on paper, using everyone's feedback. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read and provide feedback! This drawing was done on Procreate, I’m still learning how to use it haha.

Hello, this is my attempt for this project. I would really appreciate some feedback please ^^'

These took me hours and hours to do, but I enjoyed it. The only thing is that I don't see everything that Stan sees. I'm sure it takes time to get accustomed to really look at something. Anyways, here are my three attempts. At first, I misunderstood what I was supposed to do and just copied what Stan was doing in the Observation video. Then I actually tried drawing the pear on my own. And the last one is after I watched the demo video.

First attempt before watching the detailed guide. Made it bit too edgy.

nice job dividing up the planes. You got the right idea.
@thebadartist
Even after watching this video, I still am lost on if I am heading in right direction, I can see some of my values are too light and I'll keep working on it. Also feel free to point out mistakes you see, it could really help me has I don't have art community in my area, thanks in advance.

This is my first attempt. I was struggling with simplifying it. Don't know if I did that right. I would appreciate a feedback.

Critique please

I think the issue here is the reference. It’s a very pretty photo, but the bright white background is causing a lot of reflected light that flattens the image. Find a reference with a darker background and a single obvious light source. Maybe even light your own still life using a desk lamp. Your drawing is really nice and clean. If you want to get the most out of this assignment, try again with a new reference. Thanks for sharing! Good luck 👍

Agustin Gomez
maybe is better to select 4 values from the first grey and left white for the bright

I've been working on my mistakes. But the portrait is very hard to simplify, I get lost in the details... In the previous you can see smooth transitions.

From left to right is the original project, the demo, and the critique. The difference between the three isn't super crazy, but by the third go I was definitely understanding the process a bit better. Learned a lot from this project, good luck with the next everyone!
