Stack of boxes, with interesting areas of illumination and shade. Three colors only: Hansa Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Rose, Cerulean Blue. I did not like the bright grassy green I was getting with Hansa Yellow and Phthalo Blue (GS). Liked the opportunity for creating clean washes. Turned out better than I thought. The Q. Rose and C. Blue made a nice purple but then the colors separated out! “Picking up” the purple from the paper left a pink under stain. Damage control… yielded background you see on the right! Somewhat overworked… but done. Continuing to problem solve, and learning a lot by doing.
LESSON NOTES
In this lesson, I share a painting demo that shows how watercolor is painted from light to dark.

Really nice work! I love the colors, and your perspective and box construction looks pretty good, tough to keep those angles crisp in watercolor! I've also been struggling with the intensity of Phthalo Blue (GS) in a limited palette, I just picked up some Prussian Blue to try out as a replacement. Those Phthalos are tough beasts to tame!

Finally to a run at trying one of these. Actually did 2, right is on 100% cotton. 2nd I did a bit more loose sketch. But water load and mixes were the same as I painted back and forth at same time. Goes to show how paper can transform the look. Both have their own character.

This was definitely the first watercolor exercise I could do with some confidence, really feel like the process is starting to click or maybe not

This looks great to me. Shadows and light working very well together to create a very realistic painting.

Here’s my attempt. I had trouble with the background. Maybe I should have use wet on wet to have better transitions between colors instead of those blobs!

First attempt at these boxes. I think I don’t have good water control and that is making my washes uneven
Liron Yanconsky
Amazing! The washes' flow / evenness doesn't even matter in this context. The painting tells the story and the unevennes actually adds a lot of charm. Great job! 😊👏👏
