LESSON NOTES
What's in Premium?
In this lesson, we push our figure invention skills by starting with a reference and creating distinctly different poses. Instead of just drawing the same pose from a different angle, we imagine new stories and explore how things might be different. We experiment with concepts like imbalance, failure, and surprise to make our figures dynamic and expressive. By emphasizing diagonals and exploring different stages of an action, we add movement and emotion to our drawings. This approach encourages us to have fun with invention and let our imaginations run wild.

Hi, I just wanted to say that your method really helped me break through. I’d be grateful for any additional tips or advice 😊
I made 3 poses from my imagination based on the reference of the class, if you could give me your opinion I would appreciate it ;)
I love this course so far. Even if I didnt invent yet poses by myself. The course helps me as an entrance to make the proko figure drawing course more easy to practice with. Micheals Method is more simple. Feels very loose and relaxed that style and teaching by MH. After this course I'll continue Stans Figure drawing Course :)
Thank you, Michael, I appreciate your method of teaching !! :)
I can see how thinking up of a story and character details will help with visualizing invented gestures.
I believe I did well on these invented poses. I love the second especially. Feedback would be appreciated!!
I gave it a go but this was HARD for sure. The far right is where I started with a reference from the interwebs. The others I tried to invent. I can see how it gets your brain thinking "how do I solve this?" instead of just copying from reference. It was fun though!
Intrusive thoughts on the page.
Notes on Story:
- use single word or phrase to drive the ideas. talk it out. even if it's unhinged. ;-)
- consider the beginning and end of an action for the purpose of inventing. The middle may not be as interesting as how it starts and ends
- consider what is happening: big movements? imply with strong diagonals and placement of supporting limbs. Subtle action? Focus on body language: sad or regretful? bow the head, bring chest in, hide hands. Relaxed? Loose hands and limbs. etc etc.
OMG, “I’ll get you a new cat’ 🤣🤣
I love the idea of telling a story though a pose. It seems so obvious, but not at the same time. Sometimes I really need something explained to me like I’m a toddler, and this is exactly what I needed.
implementing story throughout each pose is a really cool concept. Definitely will help me going forward to get new poses down quickly!
While I haven't gotten to the point where I create entire scenarios in my head I do often think to myself "what is < insert body part> doing here?" whenever I need to pose thing from imagination.
