Hey! Awesome video. I have a question. Demo 2 from this video. The left side of the figure shows the abdominal stretch/thoracic. But the right side pinches, so I was curious why that's represented with an asymmetrical curve opposing the thoracic? I'm probably overthinking it haha. I Understand we aren't drawing contour, so I am guessing that is just a representation of the motion of the twisting torso.
Thanks for any insights!
LESSON NOTES
What's in Premium?
In this lesson, we dive into studying gesture by analyzing works from master artists like Michelangelo and contemporary comics artists such as Rob Liefeld. You'll learn how to observe and apply gesture lines—including the cervical and thoracic curves—to understand posing, body language, and storytelling. We explore adjusting gesture drawings to capture foreshortening and dynamic action common in comics. The lesson guides you through inventing gestures from imagination, drawing poses from different angles, and personalizing your approach to build confidence in creating expressive figures.

Here’s a few of mine from the proko timer tool - still haven’t done the masters studies, but will soon!
I took about 10 mins each on these, just trying to analyse where the most efficient lines should go.
I also encompassed a few of my favourite tips from rembert’s sketchbook course - putting a perspective cross under the figure to ground it, and ghost a shape to rough out the vague shape of the pose.
I don't feel as though I have been naturally working out where best to put the indications of weight, especially on figures that are lying down. I’ve been enjoying them though!
I tried a new series, trying to find balance and gain confidence with a looser line. I haven't yet found the aesthetic acceptable, but I think it needs work.
I made many versions of this poses, but this is the best result I’ve managed to achieve so far. Pose number 4 definitely gave me the most trouble. I love this process. Do anyone have any constructive feedback for me? 😊
Here's some gesture drawings I did using real life picture references. I tend to lean into making more stick drawings, I feel like I get the gesture drawn just fine as a skeleton of a future drawing, though I'm not sure? If anyone finds anything to improve of this lemme know
I was drawing with the video until this point then tried to draw it from photos. Since I have studied anatomy for quite a while I got a good feeling and sense of what the overall flow would look like. I am still trying to get away from being restricted by what I am observing and make the gesture more exaggerated
. I will keep following the tutorial and praticing.
This is great lesson since comics is what i really want to do. So should I always do gestures on my comic book thumbnails before I do boxes for structure?
