LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In this premium lesson, you'll learn how to draw an airplane using one-point perspective. We'll start by setting up a proper perspective grid, which is crucial for accurate foreshortening. You'll sketch the basic structure by dividing the airplane's body into sections and establishing key shapes. The lesson covers how to add the dome at the front, draw the tail with correct proportions, and include the stabilizing and main wings, all aligned with the perspective. Finally, we'll show you how to finalize your drawing by refining lines and adjusting details for precision.

Let me show you another demo on eyeballing proportions, this time I'll be drawing the same plane from a more extreme angle.

ah, I did much better than I expected :) Tried to do a bit of a curved perspective with the top one. Though I don't think it 100% worked, it was a good time none the less

Those came out looking good.

I had a lot of fun with this one. Eyeballing proportions really makes the process less intimidating for me.

I was getting pretty confused with the upside down view and I decided to colour it so it can be more understandable…hopefully. I have so many questions from how to construct a proper grid? Sorry at some point I gave up on eyeballing the proportions so that’s why the planes have this funny stocky look, as opposed to Marshall’s that look more slender ;). This exercise was hard!! 🆘

Now that I have crawled out of my eraser shavings I’ve learned I need practice on drawing boxes. What’s the name of that app that offers perspective tips? This was challenging and fun. As you can see from my reference photo, one of your close relatives got arrested! 😅. He has more hare anyway.😉

Without drawing the lines precisely, I don't think I'll get anywhere. From the lessons😅

Hello Marshall, thank you for your efforts and this great lessons, drawing grids free hand is very difficult so if you can you use a ruler is better and We can follow up with you comfortably.many thanks!🙏

Ok, on the last assignment, the grid was just messing with my flow. Maybe it's because I had to build it from scratch but it became hard. however. I down loaded the grids for the assignment and all was good. I did have to ge the plane out of my head. so I got one more out and then I worked on a truck from the app.

To Foreshorten is challenging. Need to practice much more.

Not a plane but another skull from a different angle. Just to study this subject more, hope you don’t mind. I want to be able to make better anatomical drawings over time. And drawings from imagination.

Eyeballing is a lot trickier than it seems, but fun to figure out :)

Drawing the plane at different angles and getting them to look identical is quite challenging but fun none the less.

Great video of the process. Quick question; at 12:05 minute in the video, the discussion on how the rear stabilizer wings look off - initially part of the illusion, later concludes grid error- but, are there sometimes situations where you‘d be inclined to ditch perspective ‘law’ in favour of artistic license (i.e. you would thicken that more distant wing to make more similar) when that makes a visually better outcome?
Marshall Vandruff
That was not a grid error, it was a proportion error. The grid never said a word about how thick that stabilizer wing should be. The artist chose it, regretted it, repented of it, and the grid was innocent. But to the second part of your note — yes! I hope that you've picked up a main theme of this course, that we use tools only as they help us do the job...

you need to have guts for something like this to do free hand. Thank you for sharing.
