ASSIGNMENTS
Your Assignment
Now that you've done your thumbnails, it's time to take them to the next stage of development.
- Choose your favorite thumbnails from the set you created.
- Develop at least three of these favorites into more detailed sketches.
- Add new details to evolve the character. Consider making changes to their hair, outfit, or adding objects they might be wearing or carrying.
Keep it Creative
As you work on these sketches, remember to keep your process flexible.
Try to keep your drawings loose, almost as loose as your initial thumbnails. This is still a great phase to be super creative. Don't be afraid to change and refine your ideas as you go. You are not stuck with your first concept, so don't feel locked down on any single design.
You have until 12/05/25 to submit your art for possible inclusion in the critique video!
And my variations.
It is quite challenging to try a different workflow. But it is also very fun ^^
Really took my time to make sure my variations felt varied. Overrall I would say I was successful XD
*Maren Variants
*Mikkles Variants
*The Entity Variants
Here is my attempt. I really enjoyed working on this and out of the three, number one is my favorite 😊
Here are my variations of my favourite Mikkel no 5. These two assignments really showed me the value of doing many very different designs for one idea, in the past I would usually just go with my initial idea, which always tends to be fairly generic. I definitely need to practice and implement this approach much more often.
Any feedback on my Mikkle variations would be very welcome!
Well, I see we must continue working with our previous assignment. Inkpot Sam.
Wasn’t really sure if the assignment was meant to be “develop 3 different thumbnails into a refined sketch” or “do 3 variations on one of the thumbnails” so I did both.
Here is my detailed thumbnail version of Entity, Tried to push myself into new milestone and I am eagerly waiting for the critiques.
I already submitted my Mikkles, but I reread the brief and just didn’t think I pushed it far enough so I took another go. The original submissions are on the right and new stuff on the left.
I chose the sixth of my miniatures and tried to develop it. For the last one, I felt the need to change his posture and draw him with his back straight, as if the excitement of having just finished writing had prompted him to stand up. Is this big change allowed? Or was it better to stick more closely to the original drawing?
Mikkel variations, decided to lean into 2 of the thumbnails. Are they different enough or could I push that further?
Hiya! I decided to go with what felt the more challenging of my options, and I liked his overall mood the best. I played around with the idea and different types of owls.
Oh, and cleaned up the work table too with a slight variant.
excited to work on the next pass!
I have to say that it was harder than I thought. I tried the assignment on Monday, but nothing came out, as if my initial concept was a holy thing I couldn't modify. I stopped working on it and came back another day, this time starting by scribbling on the character without really thinking much about what I was doing. Some ideas started to pop. I'm not so happy about the line-work and the poses feel too stiff, but still, in the end I had quite some fun doing it :)
What I take out from this exercise is that I should "force" myself to stay messy during the initial steps. I feel like it would prevent me from being too precious with the ideas.
I developed the small rat Mikkens
The base of the idea is an aggressive small creature, with monkey-like features, strong prehensile tail and paws to easily climb threes
The first exploration is more oriented on a "tribe theme" where the second one is more "bandit/thief" oriented
I developed two variation sketches here.
This method really helps me come up with ideas more easily than before.
Painting more loosely really gives me more freedom in this step.
But for the first one page I think it not bold enough.
Any feedback would be appreciate!
So many cool entries! I really was not happy with my first entry and thought that I didn't push it enough. Seeing all your entries and creativity motivated me to go more crazy on the silhouette. So I made two additional versions. One "Protecting from the sun - Excavator" and the other one a "true offroader", carrying a sled frame on the back (which will be pulled by glub) which also carries big lamps that perfectly light out the environment at night. Maren Asando can therefore move quick and work non-stop even in darkest places.
And all this because I watched you guys. I guess this is what they meant with: Surround yourself with other artists. :)
I decided to go for the more brusque craftsman ideas for Inkpot Sam, and had a lot of fun exploring different ways I could present him! I took a lot of references from my other thumbnails and mish-mashed them together with the bigger frame!
I took 3 of my thumbnails for Maren Asando and had a play with them. Not sure I experimented and pushed them as much as I could have. If I have time I might try some more. I did the one that Dave commented on and my two favourites. Any suggestions appreciated!
