Now that you’ve all had some time to try the first project on your own, you can watch how I do it and figure out what areas you are exceeding and struggling with. Here is my step-by-step demo on how to properly execute the first project for level 2 students.

When I was in my first trial of the portrait project, I almost got lost to find shapes. But, after the Demo, it became much easier for me to find shapes! The left one is my first trial, and the right one is after the Demo.

Before the video, I still think there are too many shapes, but I hope I'll get there with more exercises.

First try. The proportions are off and I only used two pencils (4B and HB). Had fun tho. I'll try again tomorrow!

Hi everyone, I have no background in art and trying ma best to learn how to draw. I love this course and want to try posting my progress. One is a try with my cat, the other one is my last study, the attempt in the portrait (I really don’t know how to draw a face). Every advice is well accepted. Thank u all!!
@superokay
This is my before and after the demo. I feel like it’s a big improvement. I took a lot longer on proportions, still think they were slightly off. Really enjoyed this project

I think I struggle a lot with line quality (searching/sketchy lines when figuring out proportions) - doing the sharp angles/stylized version was hard 😝 - before tutorial and with tutorial:

This was my first-ever attempt at a portrait from observation. Listening to the demo and critique videos but have embarrassingly missed the requirement for using five values only. Still, I stuck to the straight likes requirement and "no looking at demo beforehand" recommendation. The drawing was done with a 6B pencil on a 12.5cm x 7.5cm card. I gave myself ~ one hour to complete it as a personal challenge.

Nice!

I like how Proko’s Value Study tool simplified the values of this image. Midtones and shadow shapes are all big and simple! https://www.proko.com/values

Hello! This one was tough for me.

My first attempt and the second after watching the demo.

Portrait, 5 value. Attempt before looking at Stan’s video. Used a “construction” method for proportions, no physical measuring. Just by sight.

This is a really great drawing! I like how you rendered this portrait. The values are very thoughtfully shaded. The only critique I might have would be a minor one. Heres a draw over to help explain- I love seeing your stuff! Keep it up!

I'm so excited to start with this course. The first pear (dark) is drawn before watching the demo, the second attempt after. I used HB, 3B, 6B and 9B
Melanie Scearce
Great improvement!

I didnt understand the assignment properly at first, the digital drawing is the result of my first try. The first picture is my second attempt after watching Stan's demo. Its not good but im happy with how it turned out.

@nabeelahsan
this took longer than I wished which was quite discouraging, then I made the main value too dark and made things harder for myself haha. Still some how not mad at it lol, I definitely feel like im learning from these mistakes, and look forward to training my eye to see these shapes and proportions better.
