I’ve tried to work out the value study based on the main shapes. I think I could have used a more convincing grouping or value distribution, but it was a fun exercise.
To be honest, I didn’t struggle with choosing the shading. My main challenge was letting go of the details and keeping things simple. It was also hard to avoid rending since I rely on it a lot when shading. I couldn’t finish the drawing within the time limit as you can see in the old lady, so I gave myself a few extra minutes to create a version that matched my vision.
Took some liberties with the boy and the wings. I like to wrap my head around the limited scale of greys - I usually just use black and white, so thats quite an interesting challenge ^^
The picture comes out more light than in reality. I drew with graphite pencils and tried to stay within the low key value range. I wanted to put the attention most on the watching woman, so I gave her more light and contrast. The horses I didn't want to stand out, and so I made them going up into the background. If I would spend more time to this, I would go more deeply into the darker darks. But I wasn't supposed to take more time than 1-1,5 hours ;-)
I finished today's assignment. It's a little bit roughly drawn, but I believe that composition and objects are distinct enough. I clipped darks and added more variation to the light values.
On the second thought, maybe I should have to do the opposite, by clipping light value of the boy's costume to one and adding more variation in darks. But I guess it's just a matter of personal taste, there are a lot of ways to paint this image, depending on what you want to achieve.
Or just slightly lighten down middle grays in order to show the boy's silhouette even more
I took a long break from this assignment as I was unsure how to approach it.
Still not quite satisfied with the contrast of the limited values but a good challenge to solve with some knowledge from the previous assignment.
I had a lot of fun drawing all that. Super challenging to maintain everything coherent with such limited values.
This was a tricky one. I think it was good that the assignment photo was so different from the example so you couldn't really copy the approach. I could spend a lot longer working on this. definitely forces you to make choices.
This was extremely difficult. Really hard to manage such small value range. Here’s my assigment.
Any feedback is more than welcome😅
Here is my attempt at this one. Tried to keep these values closer together on the lower end of the scale. It’s a constant battle to resist noodling on details. I can already tell that simplification and shape-welding are going to take a lot more practice.

We would require students attending the Illustration Academy to limit their first projects to two local values. This takes rendering out of the equation and forces the artist to just think in terms of local values. Great exercise- hard at first, but it becomes second-nature once you understand how the "puzzles" work. Very nice job @Matthew Kelley
This was a great exercise! I learned so many things from this class even in just a couple of lessons. I am looking forward to the rest!
it really forced me it something i wanted to explore. and from this i need to practice it more
My attempt for the assignment! I tried not to exceed an hour in this one as I did in the previous one and it helped not get into too much details!
I found it quite difficult. The photograph is super complex, and I didn’t work very efficient so it took me waaaayyyy longer. But it was a good challenge.
Here is my submission. I do not have tools to work digitally so this is hand drawn. I simplified the drawing a bit. Any critiques are most welcome!
Here’s my submission. I tried to form a triangle between the woman’s face and the child’s body, while keeping the lighting minimal, just enough to make the scene understandable.
