This is a really cool assignment! Here’s my attempt. I tried to keep it simple and not spend too much time here.

This was a tricky one. I think it was good that the assignment photo was so different from the example so you couldn't really copy the approach. I could spend a lot longer working on this. definitely forces you to make choices.
Sterling Hundley
You did a nice job on this in deepening the values. My favorite section is the horses hinted at in the top right.

This was way more difficult than I thought it would be!
Sterling Hundley
It is a challenge- very important lesson, though. Perhaps the most important. You handled it quite well.
@filipelourenco
This was extremely difficult. Really hard to manage such small value range. Here’s my assigment. Any feedback is more than welcome😅
Matthew Kelley
Here is my attempt at this one. Tried to keep these values closer together on the lower end of the scale. It’s a constant battle to resist noodling on details. I can already tell that simplification and shape-welding are going to take a lot more practice.
Sterling Hundley
We would require students attending the Illustration Academy to limit their first projects to two local values. This takes rendering out of the equation and forces the artist to just think in terms of local values. Great exercise- hard at first, but it becomes second-nature once you understand how the "puzzles" work. Very nice job @Matthew Kelley

This is looking great! You simplified the shapes very nicely!

This was a great exercise! I learned so many things from this class even in just a couple of lessons. I am looking forward to the rest!

My attempt for the assignment! I tried not to exceed an hour in this one as I did in the previous one and it helped not get into too much details!

I found it quite difficult. The photograph is super complex, and I didn’t work very efficient so it took me waaaayyyy longer. But it was a good challenge.

Here is my submission. I do not have tools to work digitally so this is hand drawn. I simplified the drawing a bit. Any critiques are most welcome!

Drawing traditionally is perfectly acceptable! Your assignment caught my attention because it was different from the rest that way. I love the mood you have created in this little study. The separation between the layers gets muddy so I made a few adjustments to clarify things a little bit.

Here’s my submission. I tried to form a triangle between the woman’s face and the child’s body, while keeping the lighting minimal, just enough to make the scene understandable.

Hello everyone, Here is my submission for this assignment. With the first picture, I tried my best to follow along with what I saw Sterling doing with his picture study. While with the second one, I did it remembering the previous steps without referencing the video. Throughout both images, I asked myself questions, trying my best to focus on shape and compressing values, consciously choosing what I wanted the focal point to be to create higher contrast and make everything else in the picture follow along, staying zoomed out throughout the process as to not get lost in details. It was very challenging, but I enjoyed finding new ways to answer my questions :)

I struggled with this one. But I think I learned a lot. The wooden beam in the foreground was the hardest part for some reason.
