What a pleasant surprise to see The Third Man here! I haven't watched it in a while now, but I do remember enjoying the compositions and values a lot! Thanks for reminding me of it! For this assignment, I realized after finishing the first one that I might have added a little too much details haha! And I also made the mistake of not fully separating the values into different layers so it took a bit more time to do the other sketches. Still, it was fun trying to figure out how to paint this, what to put and what to omit! Super excited for what comes next!

on two of the thumbs the differences are minimal but i thought they meant a lot so I included them (skin and rim light).
Sterling Hundley
Nice work here @M C ! I feel the house without the window holds up on it's own. Perhaps with some white windows?
Alberto González
I did the assignment and I was disatisfied with the results so I decided to do it again with a different image, it did better,
Sterling Hundley
Very nice @Alberto González ! I agree that the second composition lent itself a bit better to three strong solutions. Nice work!
@ferfighter
Knowing what I know now, I would have chosen a different image. The challenge was deciding what to keep in the center where the silhouette is located as there were many gradual tones.
Sterling Hundley
Curious @ferfighter - what would have made you choose a different image? Nice drawing and interpretation in this. I'm quite drawn to the first image.
Danny Smith
Did a quick version in pencil & sharpie.

this looks really good- simple and clear
Sterling Hundley
Nice work here, Danny! Working this way forces you to simplify and to be decisive in your shapes.

Well done @shayy02 This piece of reference presents a challenge in the gradients as the figures transition into the ground plane. As we begin to introduce a second value into the shapes in future lessons, it gets easier to transition those shapes with shadow patterns. I'd be interested in seeing a version of one of these could treat the figures and the ground plane as the same value.
