LESSON NOTES
To master value is to master attention. We have the ability to limit values in order to leverage contrast to direct the viewer's eye. This is one of the most important lessons in all of image-making. Learn to use value as a proxy from time and sequence in imagery.

ASSIGNMENTS
Here it goes. I continue to have great difficulty maintaining contrast and preventing the image from becoming muddy. Although I feel more comfortable in this assignment compared to the previous one, I feel that the focus on the most important subject has been somewhat lost and that the image in general is not harmonious and clear, as in the illustration shown in the video... I understand that this is not a rendering challenge, but I feel that mastering contrast and edges is key. Feeling a bit lost…What can I do to improve in this assignment?
Here’s my attempt at the high-key study. Really interesting to see how dark the mid tone values start to appear after getting further in the process. When you start they feel so light, it’s interesting to see how truly relative value is. Gonna be introducing these high and low key value studies into my practice rotation for sure.

@Matthew Kelley Nice work! I painted over your drawing not as a correction, but as a comparison to show how much the focus of the image can change when the values shift.
It was a bit challenging to control the values in oil but it was a great exercise.
after posting it, I think i need to get back to it and refine the edges to read better. also it is relatively in the mid tones and doesn't feels like a high key thumbnail.
really enjoyed seeing everyone's work
Hello everyone, here is my submission for assignment 4B.
The first one I did along with the lecture, and the second I did while going back and forth. For the last one, I did it without looking back, just going by what I had done in the first two.
I found myself fighting detailing and trying to get it "perfectly," especially on the second and third.
Love the class so far!
I also wanted to try to learn ProCreate while doing the assignments!! 😅
Chose my own reference for this one. Photograph by Arcady Shaikhet (1898-1959). I think I could have worked on it more and put in some more detail, but since it was so complex I also knew I had to stop somewhere. I’d love some suggestions on how it could be improved :)
That's a very well done composition value study. I don't know the objectives of the exercise, since I don't have the course. You were faithful to the photo while simplifying. I still see some complexity in places that could have been simplified even further.
I tried to simplify on this one, using 'layers' and big forms at the beginning.
Took me 'bout 1,30h.
I'm finding these exercises a lot of fun to do, but I didn't think drawing the support rods would be so difficult.
I must say the architecture was a bit tricky to understand. I just tried to draw what I saw. I could have darkened my cast shadows a bit. I really like that light values are perceived as dark in relation to lighter values. The dark around the horses in the demo video are perceived as black, even though they are light grey. It almost feels like a trick, because it is not possible to see that way in real life. We always see in full value range.
