For the assignment I used 4 types of lighting and I tried to use some of the ideas from the previous lessons on color: 1. Warm monochromatic with sunset light from the right. I used 2 references for this one: Reference 1: Blade Runner 2049 (2017), the very orange / yellow scenes in Vegas. Reference 2: Gerry (2002), sunset shot, similar colors to the Blade Runner reference. 2A. Cool monochromatic night with soft moonlight from the left. Reference: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), the scene with the weird walker things. 2B. Cool monochromatic night w/ NOMAD. Reference: The Creator (2023), the lighting / color reminded me of the night shot in the movie with the NOMAD laser beam thing, so added it for fun. 2C. Cool monochromatic night w/ fog. 3. Complementary palette with afternoon light from the left. Reference: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) 4. Double split complementary palette with evening light from the right. Reference: Brother Bear (2003). ASSIGNMENTS

Using the provided reference images, create a digital painting that showcases your understanding of light and shadow by painting light from different angles.

  • Experiment with sunlight from left and right, soft light, depth, and atmosphere.
  • Study how photos, illustrations, and films use color and fog, then apply that to your images.

Good luck, and remember to have fun exploring digital painting techniques!

Wow! This was hard but worth it. I have a better understanding of blending modes and art in general because of doing these. This course has been awesome. After the grassy version I used the snowy mountain for the rest of the them. I realized too late that I should have desaturated it into black and white before adding colours instead of adjusting from from colour to colour.

Here are some different takes on the scene. I tried to give the ornamentation on the building tops a golden finish for the daylight scene.

I used the church in my hometown Ingolstadt to create a setting and then play with different lights and atmosphere. We have a clear autumn day, we have night, we have fog and we have Godzilla. Happy Godzilla day, by the way. Today is his 70th birthday :). Kind regards!

I wonder when is the deadline, but I created three paintings first as warm-ups anyway: 1-1 The animal in a dark room with pale ambient light from the left side. 1-2 Sunset light through a window. 2 1 Very cloudy mountains. I'll post to try other lighting situations later!
