I love to draw - I mostly work digitally because I am so messy. I'm looking to level up my skills, and hope to get to a point where I can sell prints!

Here are my three attempts. First two are level 1, and second one is level 2. I feel like I genuinely missed the ball on the level 2, because I feel like I wasted a lot of time blending shapes. I took rhythms into account when blending, but I feel like I lost control of some of the values. I also took some liberties with design, despite trying to capture the essence of the shapes. Still, was a lot of fun, using a cast for this one was a great idea!

These look great! I think you've done a great job with the lighting on no. 2 - you can see it hitting the top very clearly. Possibly you could go darker with your shadow values in 1 and 3 to make it more dramatic (but that's just a preference thing). I think you've done a great job with the beard in particular for no 3 but some of the curves could be balanced out with some straights somewhere (in hindsight I did this too and really needed some straights to my curves when I did this one!) keep it up!

I think I follow, but mostly maybe I don't! The plan stage lost me - the video mentioned placing things at an angle and being a certain distance from the picture plane. How does this translate to drawing? Is the picture plane the easel? Is this only when you are drawing from life? Is the viewer the artist? I see the logic of distortion but also I'm so confused.

Also I'm so sorry if I'm being dumb

I’ve started thumbnailing a second head, but I’m running into some difficulties with value choices. In my first head study I think my lights and darks were too close together, so I tried to separate them further apart this time. HOWEVER. I really feel like I need a middle value in between my lights and darks! I know it’s not ‘right’ to add a value here, so what should I be doing instead? Any light shone on this would be so appreciated!

Hmm does this work better? i just changed all my darks to darker and only kept the midtone in the lights..

Thanks for the beautiful demo Stan. Is it possible to have some advice about how to recreate the lighting effects in the reference images? When I take my own reference pictures they look nothing like the stunning images provided for this exercise, and it would be nice to know how to get the right lighting set up for a still life if working from life for example.

I have only done 10 or so of these so far. I love looking through the student work here but I see some of you using 1 point perspective lines for this. How? The drawings look great but when I look around me I just can't 'see' that. Any pointers? Do I just choose a point and wing it??

Is it back to my eye line in the horizon line? I guess it's because I'm not seeing all the boxes in one point?? Or am I? I'm in a muddle

This doesn’t look nice as it’s my first attempt at this kind of object, but I learned so much. By 1 minute I could visualize the attachment points at the bottom moving in a circle and how the front are facing us but the back ones are turned away. I wish the output looked a little nicer but I’m still glad I chose the chandelier because it did something weird to my brain XD

Lin.. this is so good 🥲

This was hard hahaha but actually so fun and very useful for me as an exercise because I am blessed with children and therefore 4 mins is usually all I get before someone wakes up! I actually was listening to the draftsman episode on cartooning again the other day and you mentioned that book in there Marshall. Not going to lie, I do hope that one day maybe you'll do a proko course on cartooning?? I would love that. Anyway here are my attempts...

Thanks for this demo Stan - definitely seeing some different choices and thought processes that I should take on board - particularly re straights and curves when designing shapes. And designing big shapes then small ones. I've missed a lot and I can see a lot I need to catch up on! Its useful to see you take time with the block in, whereas I tend to rush mine and fix later but it makes design a mess.

I love these... Seeing them in the same view but from different angles is so interesting and weirdly therapeutic. And they're so clean and easy to understand

This assessment was so addictive. I could have kept going and going but i figured enough was enough. I’m definitely going to do another one soon, but this one took forever and still not really done and didn’t even start the edges bit. My instinct is definitely towards the 2D shapes. I’ve been needing to work on my design anyway so focussed on that but I found it really hard to work form/3d ideas in. Any advice as hugely appreciated. I’ve attached the line stage, basic shadow shapes and ‘end’ stage.

Also I know I have 9 values there in the middle but I never used my lightest light and in hindsight think I should have made some areas in the lights higher key to make the lights glow more… or something, I don’t know
