I had such a hard time. I dont know if it is my pencil or paper. I had to go really hard to make it dark and it still doesnt look dark. Same with the charcoal that i use. What do you guys use?for paper and pencil

Hey Nicole, good attempt! If you are going to use charcoal (imho) the only choice is smooth (it is important it is smooth, textured will make it much harder to get smooth tone) newsprint.
For Charcoal pencils... it used to be Conte a Paris but they have changed their manufacturing recently and I see a lot of broken charcoal... alternatives I like are Marie's soft and General's 4b.
For graphite if you want a dark pencil Blackwing Matte's or 602's are what I like... 602's are harder (so not as dark) but are a nice "do it all" whereas the Matte's get some nice darks but wear pretty fast on a lot of paper.
Also it can help to use a paper stump or chamois (and of course practice laying down flat, even tone regularly)

Today's sketch, trying to do a little more invention than just copying, especially in the shadows.

Hey morelock,
This is pretty good. What stands out to me is the proportions, the head feels too big which is making the legs look real short.
As far as the rendering goes, your on the right track, but you need to make sure the rendering is used to reveal form. Think about form and not about copying the reference.

Hey Steve, thanks for the input and example. I'll work on applying it on the next one. Yes a bit of a big noggin! Thanks again

Feedback on rendering and anatomy5mo
Trying to move away from my rendering digitally looking...digital and more of a graphite/charcoal feel. Still haven't found a brush I really think is great, this one is one of Kyles graphite shaders from the photoshop packs.
Also, anatomy thoughts? Working primarily with arms and legs currently.
not totally finished, head hands feet and weapons all at various levels of finish but not really what I was studying on this one.
Undersketch included
Thanks for all critique/feedback

Hi all,
Another attempt digitally, trying to get more of that charcoal/graphite look and less "digital."
As always, open to critique and suggestions. Ignore some of the unfinished areas (face feet and weapons) I thought I had gotten most of what I was going to learn out of the piece.
Included my undersketch

Started with a Buscema sketch of Conan and ended up trying to bring it to a higher render. 602 blackwing, with a stump to blend the clothes. Still very much trying to learn to render a sketch

these are deceptively challenging. Great practice though. My reading comprehension must have been off on the level 2 stuff, not enough straight lines.
