Second assignments 💗

Trying to catch up on the videos so I’m a bit behind. Here are my attempts — sticking to Michael's Rule of 3 and simplifying the shapes instead of copying everything. Still struggling a bit with the surface mapping, especially where the pipe fold sits and where it dips in.

Playing catch-up here. Fingers crossed I'll make a submission in time for a critique! Here are my sketches for pipe and Hammock (!) folds.

A bit late with this one, but tried to keep small-mid-large design in my mind while drawing.

Here are two drawings as submissions for this assignment. One thing it took me a while to figure out was the fact that it's her right foot (left to us) coming forward under the hem in the first drawing - the big toe is the clue, I had to experiment a little to figure out where I thought the other foot would be for weight (I put it behind the forward foot angled outward. Something I see in the images is the way fabric tension lines can cross each other (rather than curving into each other), and also the way fabric seams can convey information.

Interesting use of the mannequin for structure beneath clothing. As the drawing progresses the mannequin, pretty much disappears. Fascinating. Image 04 thumbnail turned out too short. Thought the result in the larger drawing had better proportions just with some simple measuring.

Pipe and diaper folds submission

With the woman with the flowy dress, I felt comfortable using her body's form to guide the direction, size and placement of the pipe and diaper folds. I'm still a little iffy about how to shade them to show when a portion is receding versus coming out. With the frock coat man, I mainly used the seams, darts and intentional pleating on the skirt portion to guide my choices. I struggled with creating and choosing how to draw the folds on his pants. I could see that some of them were little diaper folds but I did more copying than using any tension or anchor points to influence my fold lines. Will being able to imagine the direction and shape of folds on pants be more of me just observing what happens on pants or understanding how the form beneath the drapery will guide or direct the fabric?

Project First Two Folds Submission

After the first two poses I allowed myself to disregard the academic insistence on working large & switched to a smaller format, which I have always been more comfortable with. This has led to more control (and substantial stress reduction). It is very enlightening to see your editing process at work and how it helps structuring information and reducing visual clutter. Also, the idea of sfumato and your insistence on designing to one’s own needs/ storytelling and compositional considerations have been especially helpful. So much to learn here - but also, so much fun : )

I enjoyed this. The big pipe folds on the dresses are fun to do. But I struggle with understanding and see how the body underneath affects the fabric. And just draw a body I can't see, is really challenging.

The second assignment! Had fun editing the folds. I exaggerated the interaction between the fabric and the body underneath a little bit, inventing a few pipe and diaper folds along the way. Nothing crazy, though, as it is still not easy to stray too far from the reference :)

Hello, I hope I turned this in on time- (it's July 17, but idk if the deadline meant on or before the 17th). Regardless, here's my submission. Feel free to critique. :)

This was far more challenging than I first anticipated. Really took my time for each figure and clothing to better understand the subject. I have tried to keep variety in spacing, but in some of these I believe too much folds were drawn and looks kind of messy. Looking forward to critique video!

Looking forward to critiques to see if I'm moving in the right direction. I tried to make sure the folds weren't all similar in spacing and tried to invent some folds myself when the reference folds were too complicated. I also found that it was easaier for me to start with the folds at the bottom first before I linked them up to the tension points.

I managed just two poses in a short time. I certainly need much more practise. I also think i could pay more attention to three dimensionality of the subject when drawing.

I’m not sure if I’m doing this right but I made some attempts. I’ll practice more of this type of fold.
