I'm certainly not as prolific as Rembert, but I am trying to do at least a few minutes of gesture / mannequin sketches each day while bouncing around the other course material.
Here's where I'm at so far (progress generally flowing from left to right). Even after this small number of iterations, I feel like there's been some improvement to the flow and 3d feel of these figures.
5-minute gesture drawings.
I don't put in as much time into gesture drawing as I used to because of work, so it's nice to have an excuse for it since I enjoy it so much. It's almost therapeutic to me.
I am a bit confused with the assignment instructions. Is there a set amount of drawings we are supposed to complete in X amount of time or is this an extended six-month challenge to where we can just post our progress?
Also, I'm sure I missed it, but is there a reference pack where I can download the photo references that Rembert refers to?
Loving the course so far and very insightful.
Finally got to these guys. Am liking using ballpoint but did the mannequins in Procreate. Not sure if I put enough energy into the final Soul drawing...
My drawings for this assignment. I went through the last video in this module so I had a lot of practice for this drawing
I have 2 pics of from reference drawings and 1 pic of three from imagination. Just a small selection from what I've done. Don't feel like they are great but I'm definitely learning. I wound up drawing along with Rembert during that hour long soul drawing video and it helps. But I felt like when I draw from imagination everything really fell apart as far as how things should look. I'm hoping that going through the other modules in this course will start to fill in those gaps. This is tough!
Here's my result. I really struggled with this one, especially the gesture. I'm going to take some time to work on the gesture and mannequin separately.
Trying to make this a daily thing, tried with 2 min gesture and then 5-10 min mannequin similar to how Rembert does it. I like how it's progressing, will be trying to tie both together in the soul as suggested.
My guess is we will see a critique video from Rembert for this assignment? Do we have an idea when? I'd like to get something submitted, I just don't know how much time I have before the cutoff/filming.
Thanks in advance for any info.
For the two on the right side I used Michael Hamptons gesture drawing technique as an underdrawing, because I find it much harder to achieve aproximately correct proportions without one.
I heard Rembert's advice about gesture drawing around July last year but that it was 60 1 minute drawings in 6 months. Its pretty rough to do everyday but I look back every two weeks and the drawings improve continually. My 6 months is up on the 28th but ill probably do a similar routine for heads or hands after. If anyone else wanted to take the challenge, you just want to make sure you have time to draw for fun also or the grind will get you. I was lucky enough to have a community also doing the challenge to help motivate me to continue. I attached today's and my first day of gestures.
Quick question for understanding's sake cuz i'm a little confused right now. In the video you mention we can't do soul drawing without knowing the anatomy, so what's the progression for the course expected to be? Am i "supposed" to sit here in this lesson for a few weeks or even months until i feel comfortable with gesture and mannequin, then go through the individual anatomy portions one by one, and then start doing soul drawing?
I agree with @mangoburn regarding the suggested progression. Here's one more thing to consider: you need time and practice to process and integrate any new knowledge. Don't try to rush and learn everything at once, that's an easy way to get overwhelmed. Getting comfortable with gesture and mannequin could be good short-term goal. Also post your work for feedback regularly, even if you don't think it's 'good enough'.
The way I understand it, 'soul drawing' is about the story and the attitude. Knowing the anatomy surely helps, but you can do drawings that convey emotions without it. Try to do them regularly as you learn, and watch your progress.
I have the same feeling as you! But I'm imagining this as an iterative process, so I guess the best thing is to go ahead and do the best with the soul drawing with whatever anatomical knowledge we have right now; and then when/after we study the anatomy, integrate it, and continue. If nothing else it'll be a great "before and after"...
I got some more material. I probably shouldn't get stuck on this, but this assignment feels important enough, so I try to do at least one of these a day.
The third and fifth pages are excellent! I would say the practice is paying off for you. Show us more! :)
I would have never imagined how much anxiety a little pen would give me, so after the red drawing I decided I needed to find a pen confidence booster. I spent a while to work with Bridgman and Nicolaïdes solely with pen and the black ones are the early result. I need to practice more for sure, but the lines are a lot less scratchy.
Here are some of mine. I started with the gesture, mannequin, more detailed side by sides. Then switched to doing 5 minute drawings. Definitely still feel like I’m getting used to ballpoint pens. Still sometimes struggling to hit the proportions or getting the figure to fit where I expect it.
So, I've been at it for a while, and this is a mix of my somewhat fortunate and definitely-not-fortunate drawings. I'm mostly stuck at the mannequin stage.
i have no idea on anatomy... i will follow the lectures from this course.... but these are things i learnt from soul sketching... this is so much similar to Force drawing!! very fun exercise... please give feedback!!!
