What you will learn
1Understanding Light and Shadow
Students learn about the interplay between light and shadow, how light affects the appearance of objects, and how shadows define form and space. This foundational concept is critical for creating realistic paintings.
2Color Theory and Application
The course covers the basics of color theory, including color harmony, contrast, and how to use colors to evoke emotions or convey a message. Students practice applying these theories to their artwork.
3Brush Techniques and Textures
Various brush techniques are taught to create different textures and effects. For instance, using a 'Chalky' brush for soft textures or a 'Classic Oil Smooth' brush for smoother surfaces. This helps students achieve a variety of looks in their paintings.
4Working with Digital Art Tools
Students are introduced to digital painting tools such as Photoshop, Krita, Affinity Photo, Clip Studio Paint, and Procreate. They learn how to utilize specific features and brushes in these programs to enhance their digital artwork.
5Observational Skills
A significant part of the course focuses on developing students' observational skills. They are encouraged to study objects, understand their forms, and observe how light interacts with these forms to accurately represent them in their art.
6Layering and Blending
Techniques for effectively layering and blending colors to create depth, volume, and realism in paintings are discussed. Students practice these techniques to improve the overall look of their artwork.
7Dynamic Range and Exposure in Art
The course touches on the concepts of dynamic range and exposure, teaching students how to capture and represent different light intensities in their artwork, akin to what is seen in photography and digital imaging.
8Composition and Framing
Lessons include tips on how to compose a painting, use of framing, and how to guide the viewer’s eye within a piece of art. This is essential for creating compelling and engaging artwork.
9Practical Exercises for Skill Development
Through practical assignments, such as painting spheres with varying light sources or creating artwork based on observation, students apply what they've learned in a hands-on manner to cement their skills.
10Critique and Self-Assessment
The course encourages students to critique their own work and that of their peers. This process helps them develop a critical eye for art and understand areas for improvement.
