Attached are my thumbnails, value study, and a full render. I know the render wasn't part of the assignment, but I was curious to see how it would turn out. Did anyone else notice a resemblance between the statue and Marshall?

I’m glad I’m not the only one. I thought the same thing!

I don’t normally get the projects done in time for the critique video, so I REALLY hope I can make it into this one! My birthday is the day after the deadline, so Stan, it’s my birthday wish to be included in this critique video 🙏. Anyhow, I really enjoyed this project a lot. This entire course has been a game changer.
Some things I found a bit tricky here, were ensuring my value separation between light and dark families remained consistent. When I initially separated darks from lights, I felt like I was going too dark for an average dark, but when I began to place my dark halftones, I felt like my shadows were entirely too light. So it was a subtle dance of pushing and pulling between the two. In person, I felt like the separation was enough, but now I’m second guessing that from the photo. Still happy with the result though, and really enjoyed the process!
P.s. Did anyone else feel like this head sculpt has a slight resemblance to Marshall with a long beard? 🧐

I may be stepping too many steps here but I saw that new video as I've been stuck at "Simplify from observation" lesson struggling with the concept of core shadow, which doesn't seem to be accounted for when I split my 5 values. All I see - visually and what my paint program shows - are stepped values from clearer to darker without the hard band in the middle as explained in the pear demo.
Core shadows only occur when there is reflective light bouncing back up in the form shadow typically. It’s probably several steps beyond this simplification process. Right now I think Stan just wants students to focus on simply identifying and separating light from shadow. I’m sure the specifics of core shadow, occlusion shadows, terminators, snd penumbras, etc, will be coming in future lessons.

Love what you said about the cheating part Stan. I tattoo for a living, and this is a big part of the industry ever since IPads came out. Lots of tattooers rely on these simple quick cheats, but have no idea how to draw. They’re fantastic to save time and be efficient, but too many people rely on them as a crutch to carry them, and not a tool to help them.
I totally agree! These things are great for feedback when you're practicing and learning, or when you already know HOW to do these things (I have a math degree!) and need fast feedback that you're on the right path for what you WANT to achieve but you definitely can't rely on this stuff to be creative.

Personally I found this assignment very frustrating. Especially the VR girl. I just don't feel like I am ready to tackle drawings of such complexity and scale yet, with so many proportions to consider. The issues with proportions in the VR girl are so numerous that I just get too frustrated.
I personally would've appreciated something a bit more simple to get the core concept (sketching) across rather than having such complex drawings. Especially a hand? I mean come on... everyone knows hands are very frustrating and challenging even for very experienced artists.
I dunno maybe it's me.
I don’t think it’s you or the subject. I think you’re just doing what most artists do, and that is hyper criticize your own work. I think these look great. You took a difficult challenge, did your best with it, and probably learned a ton in the process. You should be proud of that. Don’t get caught up in practice drawings being perfect. Just focus on the concepts and hours of practice put in. The drawings will grow naturally on their own. You’re doing awesome. Keep going.

This is a work in progress. I initially posted it in the level 1 but it is better here (I deleted it there). In June I was in the long room in Trinity College in Dublin and was impressed. And it is a fantastic library for one point perspective. However it is my intention to add an arcade to it in the second hall. I scanned it to continue digitally in GIMP, because this drawing on paper is only on A5 paper and it was becoming too messy. So this is a work in progress... but the intention is the level 2 with the arcade in the back... When finished digitally I shall add it here, but it may not be in time for the critiques.

I had a lot of fun with this project. I really struggled with the flippers when drawing for level 2. These videos were a game changer for me though. So thankful to finally have a video that clearly lays out the fundamentals of dynamic shape design. Thanks Stan!

This is my first time ever posting a project for critique in time. I hope I get a chance to get a critique from Stan, but I’d love to hear what others think as well. Here’s stages 1,2 and 3. This proved to be more difficult than I expected. I’m glad I gave it a try. Very insightful.

Helloo, this are my assignments what do you guys think did I do it right? I would really apreciate some critiques :D
Overall, I think everything looks really well. The only area that seems to stand out to me in a few of the poses, is the space between the knee to the feet. It feels like perhaps they were shortened to fit on the page? I often find my sketches become way larger then I intended. But they all look good.
