So I started with the line work, which isn’t attached, but then made the clipping layer for the figure. I added layers for what I saw as the occlusion shadows, and the background. Then each color got a layer. I then added layers for cast shadows and the basket texture. I added an overlay layer where I tried to push the lights and darks a little and introduce some coolness to the shadows and some warmth to the light. I added a soft light layer with some highlights, then a layer to add some more reds and pinks to the skin. Then an add layer to make some shine, and finally a color layer with some orange and blue over the background. I did find myself wondering exactly how to tell the difference between occlusion shadows and cast shadows. Also I wonder if there is a trick to changing things after you have a bunch of layers. Like if I want to shift the pose a bit or say move the arm. Then do I just have to update every layer? Or if I want to liquify the face a little to shift the expression. Is that best to flatten it and then liquify? Or is it best to just repaint layers so I can maintain the structure? Thanks for the lesson. Really enjoying the course.

This was really cool. I think it is the first time I’ve used a reference this way. Had a blast. Thanks for the challenge.

I used one of the available references. I took a lot of liberties to make it look more like a classic landscape. I feel like I came close, but there is still something missing. Some color or texture or something I don’t quite get. I really wish procreate had adjustment layers. Though I found my use of layers was more like I would “paint” a bit, then create a layer, then just refine things more, then a new layer with more refinement. I did use a couple layers with masks for the sky. Maybe the more I do it, the more I’ll get used to the layers and hopefully it will help me pick up speed. This took like four hours to do. Still really enjoying the course. Keep it coming.

My submission for the Skull Challenge. You could say I had to juggle some things to get it done.

Asked for help
So this is my second piece for the assignment. This is a spell caster image I created for the assignment. I worked in layers and used the different blending modes for the highlights, shadows, magic, etc… I love how quickly you can change colors and tweak things when the layers all work together. I used the hue and saturation on the color layers and pretty quickly came up with a few different looks.

I’m working in procreate so some things are slightly different. Some of the names are changed, but the concepts are the same. I decided to try coloring one of my grayscale paintings using multiple layers and different blending modes. This is a screenshot of some of the layers. I need to get better at labeling and organizing as I go. But this is cool stuff.

Continuing on to the hard assignment. I’m pretty happy with how it looks. I downloaded TTB_Oil_Paint_2018 brush set for procreate and used those for this assignment. Definitely open to feedback. Tried to incorporate some thoughts that were presented in the two example videos you put out so far.

I decided to try for the intermediate reference as well. It took a little longer but it was fun. I used almost exclusively the soft round brush. Working in Procreate on my iPad. In case anyone was curious.

Do you give the client a few color rough options for every page of the book?

Here is my submission. The Cheese Ball. Elementary school student Jack Munster snuck into the teachers lounge and ate his science teachers radioactive cheese ball experiment, turning him into The Cheese Ball, a cheesy crime fighting ball of justice.

Here is my final sketch. I worked over the abstraction from the previous assignment. I believe I was able to fix a few things that were not working in the rough sketch. Had a lot of fun working on this. Always looking for suggestions on ways to improve.

Ok. I see what you’re saying. I went back and took some more time to study the “average” head and compare it to him. So I changed my exaggerations to try and fit the slight differences I was able to find in his face and after a few attempts I came out with this one, which I feel is a step in the right direction. So thanks everyone.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the help. Does anyone have any recommendations for what to exaggerate or better ways to push the exaggeration without losing the likeness? I found that is one thing that is giving me trouble, when I push the exaggeration I completely lose the likeness.
