Project - Simplify from Observation

Course In Progress

Use the reference photos in the downloads tab or go find your own reference and start drawing! Remember, this project is all about simplifying to clarify.

Make sure to keep these 3 things in mind:

Shapes - Draw your shapes with straight lines
Values - Use only 5 values. 2 in the shadow and 3 in the lights
Edges - Make every single edge sharp!

I'll publish my drawing demos of both levels next Tuesday so you can watch me go through the problem solving process. For a chance to be included in the critique videos, you must submit your drawing to the community by January 26th, 2023, so I can begin filming and producing the critique video.

Nedir life
We Believe Information Should Be Clear and Worth Your Time Let’s face it. Finding real, reliable information online is not easy anymore. Everything starts to sound the same. Same definitions, same wording, same surface-level answers. At nedir.life we are here for people who genuinely want to understand something, not just skim through it. https://www.nedir.life/ We don’t write to fill space. We ask ourselves one simple question: Why would someone search for this? And then we write for that curiosity. We go beyond basic definitions. We talk about where a concept comes from, why it matters, and how it fits into real life.

I used the pear download 1 photo reference. I struggle with shapes a lot.
Sajal Khare
Hey this isn't really a critique but smoothe out your darks they create unnecessary noise which will can be a bad habit he tough one to break

My first attempt, trying to understand better how to do the shapes

Great job.

I think I did pretty well for a first timer. This is my first try drawing the pear, with some of the steps included. Any feedback is appreciated!
Petra-Kate Huff
So cool that you included step by step photos. I didn’t think to do that.
@pierreyves
Here my second try of a pear after listening some correction. I have some trouble to draw the different facets of the pear with different inclination lines
Petra-Kate Huff
I think this is great. I think the only thing I would suggest is whether you could add more shadow along the side. There were 3 download photos of the pear. Maybe keep practicing with the other two so you don’t get bored. Great progress.

There are my three pears before demo. I don't like the fist one so I redrew it.

You are definitely not a beginner

level 1 pear 1 the actual draw wasn’t horrible but this is my first time actually trying to shade, didn’t know it was gonna be that difficult xD. had fun doing it though!

I agree, the overall shape of your pear looks great. You have a good eye for proportions. Something you can improve on is designing your value shapes to follow the form of the pear. I put together this tip sheet using a screenshot from the video of the pear that has been simplified to planes -- I really like this image because I think it expresses the core idea of the project well. Think of a wireframe covering the pear. Each "plane" that makes up the wireframe will be facing towards or away from the light source at varying degrees which will determine how much light it receives. The planes that are more directly facing the light source will be lighter in value, and the planes facing away from the light source will be darker in value. It's like putting together a puzzle using these geometric pieces -- using 5 values, how will you build this pear to best express those value changes? Something else that helps organize your values is to start by making a clear separation between the light and dark value areas. A common way to do so is to divide your 5 values as 2 dark values and 3 light values. Keep the majority of your dark values on the dark side and light values on the light side and that will give your drawing clarity of form. Hope this helps :)

Level 1 pear 2 kind of feel a bit lost
Petra-Kate Huff
In what way do you feel lost? I think this is pretty good. Maybe add more “planes” to the internal piece of the pear before shading.

Attempted the second pear image. Any feedback is appreciated.
Petra-Kate Huff
Good job. I think it looks really good.

Had fun with this, though not sure if I followed everything correctly. Attempted level 2 as well.
Petra-Kate Huff
Good job. The only thing I not is you used a lot of curves and the suggestion from the project was to use straight lines.
Antone Gonzalez
Didn't listen to the whole instruction and got carried away. Doh. Will do another with only one edge type.

Here is pear 2 with hard edges.

Started with a real pear but had I hard time simplifying the shape so I switch to the images. It was hard sticking to 5 shades.Happy to get feedback.
