Stylized Refinement + Assignment

By using the process demonstrated in the lecture video, do master studies of the images provided. If you feel stuck on one of them, move onto another and come back to the first. This way you can look at it with a fresh eye.

For the first image, use the drawing method as shown in the Lesson.

For the second image, try the build up technique in the “speed painting” portion of the lesson.

For the third image, try to stylize the study as shown in the lesson.

Loved this exercise! It's such a joy seeing how effective the simplified the shapes and brushstrokes are at conveying the subjects, especially when watching it take shape as I paint the study 2.5 hours on the first painting, about 45 on the second and third

Back from the week 5 critiques and decided to redo the assignment because there was a lot I missed I did a revised study of each reference, particularly to: * To properly understand the forms and brushwork * Capture the soft and hard edges and understand the focus of the piece, which I previously missed * Generally better values and value groups Then I did a new speedpaint of each pic, particularly to: * Simplify more - being more conscious of what information I'm conveying with each brushstrokes and how to do that in less brushstrokes * Paint in fewer, more authoritative brushstrokes for clearer forms * Paint faster/more efficiently

Had a lot of difficulty with the assignment. I tried to stay around the 30 minute mark, but this proved relaly challenging. Perhaps I should have allowed myself more time to properly internalise the values and colours. Though this is what I have for now. I also did some quick 5-10 minute speedpaints for 2 of the references provided.

Painting without an undersketch or drawing is abnormal to me...guess it only reveals my weakness as an artist therefore it was crucial I do this assignment to learn speed painting. So glad I did too xD

Really really love this assignment. I'm going to start doing ~30 minute speed paints of master studies as my warm up. Speed-painting is really nice if you don't concern yourself with proportions and only focus on getting the correct colors, values and edges. But having such large proportional mistakes and unappealing shapes does bother me though... It really kills the piece for me. I'll continue doing 30ish minute speed-paints but I'll use the first 2 mins for a lay-in. I got sucked into the first painting and completely forgot to update my progress. Sorry! I posted 1 minute time-lapses of these 3 studies on YouTube. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links here but if you need to see the full progress my YT is linked on my Proko account Also, I should have really pushed the blurred edges on my speed-paints. Critiques always welcome
