Hi Lucas! I'm Lucy Yao, a 2D artist working in the game industry in Taiwan. Excited to be here!
This problem has been bothering me for a long time — my characters almost always have the same expression. Different pieces, different settings, but it's always that same face: slightly annoyed, lips pressed, looking away. I love a moody vibe, but I've been stuck with this one expression for years, and that's exactly why I'm here. I want my characters to laugh, panic, get awkward... and still look like mine.
My goal: by January 2027, I want to be able to draw the same character with all six core expressions and still have them feel like the same character. As a final test I'll redraw one of my old pieces and give the character a different face than usual.
Attaching 3 pieces as my starting point. See you in six months!

I am retiring from my day job in the Fall. I intend to write and draw a graphic novel. I want to use this course to help me design the heads and faces of my main characters. My goal is to have enough in a year to submit to publishers.

Congratulations on your retirement! And using it to create a graphic novel sounds like a dream come true. Thank you very much for sharing your goal, and I hope the course helps you achieve it

I'm excited to take this course! Here are my goals:
1. Complete 2 portraits that showcase the head by October 1.
2. Observe faces (from photo and live references) and accurately sketch their likeness.
A few examples of my starting place to track progress. Often when I add details to the head, things go flat and look wonky. I'd like to work on adding more depth and appeal.

Good work Philip, thank you for sharing it together with your goals. The goal sounds super feasible, specially with a solid backgorund like the one you show here. I think a bit more focus and understanding on the planes of the face will really help to make these portraits shine. Good luck with the course and your practice :)

My goal is to improve my ability to draw heads / characters from imagination. I aim to complete this course in 2 months, and check in with my progress each week by drawing 4-6 heads without reference.
For my starting point, I drew 2 characters, from different angles without reference. After I complete this course, I will try to create 2 artworks that showcase character heads / faces.

Love it Chanel! This is a fantastic way of keeping track of your progress and staying motivated. I also like that you wrote notes about what you struggle with, that is gonna give you a bunch of clarity along the way. In my opinion, these heads look really good specially for drawing them from imagination. A bit of a better understanding of the depth of the facial features will help you to convey 3/4 angles in a better way, make them more three-dimensional and believable. But you have a very solid base already. Good luck with your goal, and I hope the course gives you all the tools you need :)

My end goal is to get over my fear of drawing heads. The heads I draw tnd to look kind of like trolls. My goal for this course is to try and complete at least one video per week.

Trolls! hehe. I feel you... when heads come out looking weird it can be really discouraging and intimidating. I love your goal of completing a video a week, I just wanna remind you that applying the video and drawing as much as you can is what will make the biggest differennce. Looking forward to seeing your assignments :)

My goal is to be able to draw a multi-panel dialogue comic page between two original characters in 4 months (with all the character design and iteration that goes with it). To be able to illustrate the characters in my head interacting on the page would be a dream come true!

Fantastic goal Alfie! I also dream of making a comic... I hope one day I take the time to give it a try :) What I like the most about your goal is that it is very specific! Just make sure to apply everything that I teach in the videos, draw as much as you can, and I promise you will get closer and closer to that goal 🔥

Hey folks!
🤗 ABOUT ME
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I am Alexander (swiss) and super happy to be here. I jump around between traditional and digital (clip studio paint) tools. I draw for fun but I also push myself whenever I can. Started in december 2023 and I believe the journey is the ultimate goal. Always open for constructive feedback and love to tell stories. But dont forget the golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I am here to learn and grow - so throw everything at me without hesitation.
At Lucas: Welcome to the other side of the world (europe)! 😁
🏁 MY ULTIMATE ENDGOAL
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Develop a sense for styling the head and faces that captures the likeness (not hyper realistic; reconazibale with exaggerate features) and also tells a story while staying reconizable. Portrait in cartoon and comic book manor heavily leaned on Lucas current style.
- Improve shape design.
- Learn how to draw expressive faces.
- Distinguish between characteristics and learn how to exaggerate.
- Combine with stereotypes or references such as animals.
- Spot reconazible attributes (essence/silhoutte) of a person.
- Learn how to render, color and shade.
🧨 WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
My current portrait approach (meassuring with pencil) is very time consuming and the wrong way to achive my goal. A portrait takes me about 5-7 hours with meh results. But even worse is that it does not feel creative, no joy its just planning and meassurement. The good news is I am able to spot my errors and learn from them (missalignments, small relative proproportion errors). But after spending that much of amount I usually decide to leave them.
Thanks for taking the time and any advice to fullfill my goal is highly appreciated!
Best regards

Hey Alexander! Thank you for the super detailed goal and introduction.
Already reading something like this tells me that you are gonna see results with the course. Discipline, specificity, and self-awareness are all traits that pair well with good art :)
Seeing your work, I can understand what you mean by your current process not feeling creative.
The course starts with very strict foundations, but it moves on to more creative work around its midpoint. So my only recommendation is to take those first modules seriously and to draw as much as you can, so when you arrive at those more creative lessons, you have the knowledge and muscle memory to have fun with them.
With that said, you seem to have made an excellent plan. Now it is time to execute ✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️!

My goal is to be able to draw characters consistently.
For example, when I use a reference, I can sometimes capture their likeness. But when I draw them on my own, or try to draw their face on a different pose or reference, I cannot keep their likeness consistent.
I also struggle to capture the emotions and expressions that I have in mind. so I want to be able to express my thoughts better, not just make a good copy of a ref
I have also tried to draw the same character from the same reference (realistic ref) I ended up making 4 pieces that look like they were made by 4 different people

Hey Manal, good stuff! Thank you for sharing your work and your goal. I think you might not be giving yourself enough credit with these. I can certainly see the resemblance to the character. You are nailing their eyes and overall mood, which sometimes can be trickier than the face type. Keep in mind the distance of certain features, like the length of the nose and jaw, and I think you will have an easier time. All the good luck with your journey 🔥

I did this character line art from reference a couple days back. I wasn't going for an exact likeness since I wanted something that felt more like mine.
Then after the livestream, I attempted this character from the front, profile and 3/4 view in my sketchbook without reference. This was not a good time because I struggle drawing faces at such a small scale. I find ink makes anything look better so I added some hatching.
At this stage, my first goal would just be to be able to draw successful heads from these three angles by September.

Good goal Jade, sounds realistic, and I love that you are setting a time constraint for it. You are gonna hear me say all of this in the course, but just in case, careful with things like the size of the eyes and eyebrows. Those are two very easy things to keep consistent in these three angles that would imrpove consistency a ton.

This is where my skills are currently at (using zero references), and the problems I can see. (Implying the existence of problems I don't see yet.) I'm just squealing with excitement about this course! This is exactly what I've been looking for--I've been dying to draw my own characters in a more anime/comic style, but I lack the skills to get what's in my head onto the page.

Very solid work Laura, and a great landmark to see your growth in the next few weeks/months. I can see you struggle with the construction based on the amount of lines that those drawings above have. We are gonna go super hard on construction in the first part of the course, so if you follow along I'm confident you will improve the ease of your construction. And yes, I can see some changes for the character, especially that low angle, but that one can be very challenging.
