Keeping the subject simple.

Finished the layers assignment. The first part, I’m still need to start the second part where I customize it

Like the last assignment, I kept the subject relatively simple so that I could focus more on layer organization and process. I did this using the bottlenose brush out of the new default gouache brushes, and I really enjoyed it, and am especially happy with how I was able to finally get some sharp edges where I wanted them! This was also the most orderly process I've had so far, where I felt pretty confident about what steps I'd do after the next, which helped improve my confidence and let me think through things much more easily than before. I'm also learning I'm super a fan of doing a saturated values block-in at the start of the process (that Jon did in one of the demos), and even when only some of the colors leak through it adds such a charm to the final product. It also just helped with planning things out and making artistic decisions more iteratively rather than feeling like I'm starting with the final draft.

I learned a lot from this assignment. I used Clip Studio Paint. Didn't realize just how helpful using these kinds of layers could be. Also ended up having lots of layers (I had to split the layer screen shots into two). Hopefully I'll learn to streamline the process a bit more in the future. That said, fun times!

Well, that was incredibly difficult. They came out a bit better than I expected though. I forgot the ink on her fingers! No!

Instead of complaining, I made this little egg tutorial. While I can pencil-shade an egg in real life, it's still a bit awkward for me in photoshop. The rationale being, if I couldn't make a satisfactory egg, then anything more complex was going to be an awful experience. I hope this helps anyone else out there that's finding the tablet an awkward transition from other media.

Finally finished this drawing. After some problems with both buffering the videos and problems with my Apple Pencil. Everything is fixed now and i finally finished this piece :)

Well, this was challenging ! Don't know how much time it took me, but I'm pretty happy about the results. I think I pushed the contrast a bit far on the second one tough. I have a problem with perfectionnism, so I tried not to overpaint/ take too much time on those without sacrificing too much rendering.

It was a fun assignment.

At first I thought I wouldn't make it. But breaking down the task into small parts really helped! First is the gesture and the figure, and slowly you build up the whole piece!

Talk about jumping into the deep end - I found myself getting distracted a lot by the detail and had to force myself to focus on just the larger shapes. Not perfect but I'm actually pretty happy how this turned out. I really started geeking out when it came to playing with layers and exploring the different brushes. A note about the beads - I actually created each strand on its own later and created a shadow for each as well. Then I merged them all together before applying shading to better blend it into the body.

My submission for the two versions of the models. The second one was harder without a unique reference so I went for a darker less detailed scene. The layers started to get messy with the second version

Hello, I did not see the attached photo for the assignement, so I picked one on Pinterest, now I will retry with the good file 🥲 I had pretty much fun on doing this one though, I picked a more textured brush. I like the rough aspect of it.

This was a really difficult challenge for me brand new to any sort of painting

Here is my attempt! I had a lot of fun doing this, but there were definitely some challenges that I had to overcome. I think I spent way too much time trying to figure out the reference in the first part of the assignment, as the cloak/fox pelt was really confusing for me to look at and decide what details to include/omit. Part 2 was my favorite, and I tried my best to make something that I thought was interesting. I've attached a screenshot of my layers for both versions, so you can see how my process works, I still think I can be more efficient with my layers and merge things down, which is what I tried to do more in Part 2. I also wondering if my values could use some improvement, so if anyone has some critique on that I'd love to hear it.
