LESSON NOTES
A demonstration of how to use a grid to draw from reference.
ASSIGNMENTS
Your assignment is to do this with me! Again, it may seem overly simple but learning how to do this is a great place to start for the rest of the course.
Download the reference from the downloads tab of this lesson.
Fyi, there aren't any grid lines on my sketch b/c I'm working in Procreate and using its built-in grid.
Hi @Morgan Weistling!
I'm so excited to be taking this course. I've had a few beginner painting courses recently in acrylic, watercolor, and oil. Oil painting was what intrigued me the most of those 3 mediums. I settled on your course as I appreciate the "Painting without a Brain" method. Just am easy to follow along course that will get me established with some fundamental painting knowledge.
Here's my attempt at using the grid method. I must admit I am definitely one of those "grids are cheating and no REAL artist uses them" camp, however after putting my ego aside and giving it a try I was pleasantly surprised that after the tedious grid setup my initial lay-in was completed in record time.
I'm looking forward to what I can pull out of this course and to see my improvement.
Cheers!
The printer I used made this image so dark it was hard to see any details.
My image wasn’t matching up with what was on the instructional example.
I think the printer I used cropped the image a bit.
Things got weird.
I don’t know if I should start over or not. When I finished I nearly got the gray acrylic to paint over and just try again tomorrow.
😅😮💨
Any advice would be appreciated.
Hopefully if I do need to restart and get the image fixed before proceeding to the next lesson….. one of y’all lovely individuals could let me know.
♥️ Happy Valentines ♥️
Looks quite solid already. The distance from the lower lips to the bottom of the chin has become too large; push the chin up a little and lower lip down a little. As he is squinting his eyes, the eye white should be smaller. Note that the end of the mouth go down a bit and then curl up again. The position where the glabella meets the nose can be slightly lower. And the nasal bone just below the glabella can be a little thicker. Good luck and have fun!
It was challenging to completely capture the accuracy of shapes in each grid so I tried to keep in mind comparing the negative shapes to vertical + horizontal edges and noting both positive and negative shapes being formed
Hi Morgan, great course....thank you very much. I would appreciate your feedback regarding my charcoal sketch.....thanks in advance!
There is a distortion in the vertical that I am not sure whether it is my sketching at fault or if I have made a mistake in the proportions in the setting up of the grid.
Any feedback appreciated. I’ve never really drawn a face before… I love to paint but hate to draw so this is a new adventure for me.
I usually draw in graphite, and so charcoal isn't my favorite. I can see plenty of structural issues like the top lip is too tall and fat and the eyelids should be heavier, but I'm betting I can correct a lot of this when painting. It's a start
Back to the drawing board! What a mess! My charcoal was too hard, and my surface too plastic due to the acrylic paint! I decided to draw this girl as I already had a print of this AI generated image that I created a while back based on a photo of someone I knew.
an old messed up panel. I didn't have charcoal, but will get some. Until then, I drew with pencil
So much to learn but I can’t believe my first attempt at drawing this wasn’t a disaster.
Really enjoyed getting the sketch going, the grid was super helpful.
Looking forward to next steps.
Eric
