ASSIGNMENTS

Your assignment is to do this with me! Again, it may seem overly simple but learning how to do this is a great place to start for the rest of the course.

Download the reference from the downloads tab of this lesson.

I've looked at my underpainting for a few days and have made a few what I feel are improvements What do you think?.
Morgan Weistling
I think you’ve done really well and definitely need to move on to laying down your shadow patterns and move forward. Good job!

I intend to do the observational drawing for my main project. But I had an 8x10 available and wanted to be thorough in mining this course for skill and knowledge. Since this will be my second painting ever, I'm thinking I'll do a value study with this prior to playing with color on the larger canvas. The vine charcoal is a blunt instrument and it feels like the margin for error is relative to canvas size?

Got my averages in and I think successfully salvaged it. Tried the finger blend on the cheek, jaw and chin. I think I'm getting it now? Accidentally used the wrong brush on his lip but left it because five o'clock shadow.

I suspect my issues also stem somewhat from the grid line thickness? The reference grid has super thin lines. I should have spent more time sharpening my vine charcoal. Eager to attempt fixing the drawing in the first pass of paint!

Damn I should have stepped away and come back before spraying the fixative. His lips are too low.

After photographing the image, I noticed that the right eye seems too large, and I can't wait to see what else you find for me to change. I have always admired your work and feel it is a privilege to learn from you.

Hello Morgan, Thank you so much for offering this course. I have had an issue with elongating half of the face on my portraits, ie nose to mouth. It took me a good while to notice it. I liked using the grid, (thank you for giving us permission to do so). I had to concentrate on treating the face as abstract shapes and not features. This was good practice.
Patrick Bosworth
Nice lay in! It looks like you kept from elongating the nose to mouth proportion here. The grid method really helps "turn off the brain" to help you see the face as abstract shapes. This has a really close likeness! One thing I noticed is the mouth and far side of the face feel slightly wide, the far corner of mouth particularly feels a little flattened out, rather than hugging around the spherical muzzle of the face. Take a look at this video about how the far side of the face foreshortens, it helped me keep in mind the 3D curvature of the head when laying in portraits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfnhtR7yRYc And here's another one from Basics about how the features all relate in perspective. https://www.proko.com/course-lesson/project-portraits-in-perspective Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see the painting!

This is great! :)

realizing his proportions are off , i stayed with this bc it looks like my uncle Roy who raised me a long time ago. he was like a father to me:). i will do this assignment several more times to get closer to your model too. i really like it for now and will do in oils to render what my uncle. thank you for what you share and how you've put this together to help other artists Morgan. i appreciate the dedication to hard and fun work!

First attempt at a grid. I think I screwed it up. I forgot to delete the border when measuring. So I had to work upside down alot to just see shapes. Also 1st attempt at charcoal in at least 20 years, literally, because I tend to lean on the paper and make a mess. I think it would be better if I worked at an easel? Should I gesso over this and do it again? I think maybe I shoulld just move on.
Morgan Weistling
you could use this and just be more careful as you lay in the darks

Morgan Weistling
it's all placed correctly. go for it

A first try with Procreate. Next I’ll mainly work on canvas and with oil paint. Thank you for creating this course. I’m looking forward to learn to paint. Finally!

I'm enjoying the course so far and am excited to start my first portrait painting.
@lunsfordmain
Fyi, there aren't any grid lines on my sketch b/c I'm working in Procreate and using its built-in grid.

Hi @Morgan Weistling! I'm so excited to be taking this course. I've had a few beginner painting courses recently in acrylic, watercolor, and oil. Oil painting was what intrigued me the most of those 3 mediums. I settled on your course as I appreciate the "Painting without a Brain" method. Just am easy to follow along course that will get me established with some fundamental painting knowledge. Here's my attempt at using the grid method. I must admit I am definitely one of those "grids are cheating and no REAL artist uses them" camp, however after putting my ego aside and giving it a try I was pleasantly surprised that after the tedious grid setup my initial lay-in was completed in record time. I'm looking forward to what I can pull out of this course and to see my improvement. Cheers!
