ASSIGNMENTS
A continuation of the previous lesson, but applying the planes of the edge and basic color to a painting.
Your assignment is to follow along and post your work here.
The reference is in the downloads tab of the previous lesson.
Hello Morgan! I continued working on previous assignment and tried to complete it with mid values. I would love to have some feedback and how I did with respect to values. Phone may be exaggerating some of the pink color here. Thank you.
Welp, this is what I have. I can see the edges need to be softer. Also, It's kinda Interesting have the old one, next to the new one. Putting In those halftones and some highlights really makes a big improvment.
One thing I liked about what you said about the skin being next to other skin makes it more red. But I notice you didn't do that on this portrait. But i was tempted to pain in dark reds in the eyes and around the nostrils like u did in one of the pervious lessons. Also, like how you added the gray In there to turn the form too. Welp, Anyways thank you again.
My final painting, loving the lessons so far. Very straightforward and especially translates well after doing gouache painting with Watts Atelier for some time
Half tones added, and more modelling. Process photos and final scan. Any feedback back is appreciated.
Hmm, I don't think I'm able to visualize the planes of the head while painting. I'm often unsure about the direction of my brushstrokes, which makes the process confusing at times. Was really trying to avoid it looking muddy. Also, I struggle to determine if I'm applying too much or not enough paint. But overall I've been learning a lot and any advice is greatly appreciated.

I took your painting and brought it along a little further by addressing small little edges that were still not softened enough, and therefore creating little sour notes that stood out. Overall, you were getting your edges pretty good. But when you don’t address all of them, the ones that are still a little too sharp or picky or look like lines will stand out. Try to go around with a fine tooth comb and knock out every little edge that needs to be soft or hard. I also cleaned up your half tones a little bit do a deep comparison between your image and what I did to it to learn more.
I practiced this painting method on a digital platform using pastel brushes.
I feel like I unable to control the half tone and dark half tone. in most cases, the blending between the light and shadow families is flat.
But I enjoyed completing this painting.
I tried without a sketch underneath, just squinting and drawing shadows. I tried not to lighten up the shadows too much.
Had a lot of fun doing this.
I like to draw first on newsprint and then transfer the drawing to the canvas (this time masonite board).
I enjoyed practicing for edges using my finger. I wished I had a better surface. I used a canvas pad. It sucked the paint so fast and not much paint left for rubbing. But I did my best. Putting down a half tone was difficult process. I was amazed to watch how you painted. I am learning a lot. Thank you.
Decided to have fun and did this little gouache study. At this point at did no blending at all. Let's now have double fun and start using some "water glazing" to soften some of those sharp edges.
I might have gone a bit all over the place with the colors here...
I feel that the half tone chroma is too low on the second image. It seems like it diminishes a bit after a while on the canvas board. I’m getting a lot out of this course Morgan, thank you so much!
