I went with
theme: corroded
[A poster for potentially upcoming Snow Crash game - I’ve been reading the book lately, so I’ve imagined that someone began pre-production for a game and hired me to make illustrations for it😁]
therefore industry - computer entertainment/games
Space - 11”/17” nice proportions for poster - so imagining doing one)
Thumbnails are 5,5/8,5 cm [same proportion thought]
Time - week [I’ve started reading the book earlier- doesn’t matter though]
_____
Corrosion - gradual decline of society [or destruction of physical matter]
There is much food for thought on that matter in Snow Crash
What affected people in the past and influences them to this day.
But without spoilers here are my ideas:
#1 “The raft”
- a very symbolic location from the book shown of ships tied together slowly corroding [in real artwork I would make dark on dark background of computer noise - snow crash itself]
A raft has many ideas surrounding it - so it slowly dissolving in the ocean with the whole society on it is quite meaningful
+ it has a bright white/not corroded robot-dog on top of it [I guess you have to read the book to find out why, but I’ve also made a quick sketch of a dog separately]
#2 the brain slowly dissolving while looking at 1s and 0s in VR- I guess it's quite self-explanatory))) especially these days, the author would probably scream in fear and delight - how close he came to the truth
Thought deteriorating brain leaks Sumerian letters [to fully get it, once again, I would recommend reading the book]
#3 All physical objects on the floor must be corroded on this poster: sword, skateboard, army dog tags, Sumerian tablet… even pizza
But VR glasses in the middle should be clean and crisp - kept in good shape cos used every day while the world around falls apart
On that positive note, I hope you enjoyed these!) and recommend reading Snow Crash - it is awesome and you will see how influential this book was on sci-fi since!)
Have a good day !)
P.S. In preparation for that project I spent a few days playing Cyberpunk in VR glasses… scary but cool)

@Viacheslav [ki-Vi] Polianskii Such nice values and sketches. Professional level presentation. I'm partial to the idea behind sketch 1 and the design of sketch 2 in its use of negative space. In sketch one, I'd love to see variation to avoid a straight line formed by the boats. Possibly raising the cameral angle so that we're looking down on the boats and you could push them all to the top of the composition. Also remember to leave room for the typography if it'g going to be a poster! Nice work.

Based on a poem my friend wrote about the effects of urban life conflicting with nature, i chose icons, soda and re-purposing to illustrate corroding in three different ways, physically, mentally and spiritually.
In the first thumbnail, a surreal landscape with a waterfall flowing through teeth-like rocks, with some missing, and in the foreground boulders shaped like large teeth and soda cartons.
The final artwork to be done in oil paints, similar to a Salvador Dali.
The second thumbnail, soda drinks with ice uses the 'dripping machine' analogy to hint at the possible causes of mental health issues cased by drinking soda's.
The final image to be in comic book style,
The third image depicts the corroded spiritual places that have been re-purposed, and the scene includes rain aiding the corrosion.
The final artwork to be a layered collage of neon, over a traditional drawing,
I have drawn the thumbnails in landscape format to be suitable for storyboarding as an animated poem.
Theme: Corroded
Audience: Adult.
Content: A poem that compares Wordsworth view from Westminster bridge to a contemporary take on London. Some of the sights have ‘corroded’ in comparison.
Size: 11" x 17" (this is proportions, not actual working size)
Time: Deadline: One Week

@Pamela D Hey Pamela:) Nice presentation of your final sketches, as well the thinking behind them. The third sketch is the most clear visually as a complete picture with a clear subject. Sketch 1 is a bit more abstract and 2 is clear in subject, but the analogy may be on the subtle side. The solution you choose should mirror the tone of the poem. Not being familiar with the text, I can't be of much assistance there. All in all, you've put together strong contenders. Which sketch is your favorite; which can you visualize completing in a way that aligns with the vision of your work?

I thought it would be more logical to post under Major Assignment 3, but since others have posted here I will do it too.
I have been working with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The scene from the book is when the lawyer is hiding, waiting for Hyde to appear so that he can confront him.
My opposing themes are Rational vs Primordial (civic vs animalistic). After doing pages and pages of words, reading about the Victorian era, watching the movie, I started to see a interesting idea develop about the morals of the time. People in the middle and rich classes where expected to follow a lot of social rules and dress a certain way. This contrasted Hyde a lot, this ugly, barbaric creature that roamed the streets at night, following his primal instincts and lashing out with anger. I also thought about how people judged each other. The poor where vermin, they where to be blamed for their poverty. All this lead me to the idea of these mannequins in stores, dressed the correct way, looking down at the ugly, hunched creature of Hyde, judging him with a hollow disdain.
I found the book particularly difficult to work with, because of very clear opposing theme that already existed in the book. If anything, this book is about opposing themes, and the duality in nature and in us humans. I quickly got an image in my head that was not original, but felt like the right answer to the assignment. A lot of my work was then trying to get rid of that image in my head, and think further and find less obvious answers.
I hope that my conceptual idea is clear enough here, and shines through the narrative and the environment. This was the most challenging part of the assignment. I tried to stick with an interior illustration too, because that seemed even more of a challenge.
This course is really stretching my mind, I love it!

I chose the film There Will be Blood. I wanted to show the coming of the oil industry. How it develops itself and takes over what was once in there before. I wanted to show Daniel with the milkshake mostly because it's this innocent thing, but within the context of the dialog in the film it's something else, he's also covered in oil as he's slowly being consumed by his obsession.

@edel82 You really pulled in value control to help communicate the oil industry VS. the existing church and town. If I'm reading this correctly, your themes look like they might be innocence VS corruption? Perfect themes for this film. Sketches 1 and 2 are move favorites and 2 is very strong as it is. I wonder if cropping and pushing your values a bit further as you look to the final, as well as the introduction of some foreground elements could increase the drama? That said, if your idea is the coming of the oil industry, it may be wise to keep them separated in the background. That oil rig peaking through in the foreground of sketch 1 could be very effective.

Mashup corroding robot in a junk yard and nursery rhyme “Twinkle, twinkle little star”; Robot contemplating how to revive and get out of the junk yard…hope? from the light of a little star

@C P You did a great job seeing this all the way through. The idea is well thought out and gives a sense of hope in the darkness. I think both b and C are the best compositionally, as they feature the robot the most as the central concept. I did a very small paintover on sketch C (attached) to show how light might fall on the robot and car with the star as the light source. Sorry I couldn't get to this sooner!
