MAJOR ASSIGNMENT 3
This week, you’re taking the first steps to learn how to problem-frame. You will be challenged to build your own three-sided box. Ironically, in taking away limitations, the problem becomes that much more difficult to solve. You must find, validate, and fill in the criteria yourself.
Theme: Corroded
Audience: Determine this through the what do you want, industry research and role model exercises. At this point, you should have a general idea as to which industry your work will fit within.
Content: Always begin with text. Find a story, narrative, project brief, lyrics, poem, screenplay, or project description that provides a story related to the theme.
Size: 11" x 17" (this is proportions, not actual working size)
Time: Deadline: One Week
Once you’ve established these criteria- don’t cheat. Solve the problem that you have framed. If you truly want to work within commercial industries as an artist, this skill set is often the very difference between a professional and an amateur.
MAJOR ASSIGNMENT 3- Alternatives
Too much, too soon? No worries- even though this level of independence and autonomy is what you should strive for, I realize that solving open-ended problems takes time to understand and master. I'm including project 3 alternatives below. Just remember that once you leave here, you'll be on your own again, as you try to answer the simple questions- "What the hell do I paint?" and "What is worth my time?"
