I started out thinking level 1, but ended up doing level 2. This one was a doozie. I tried to take my time with it and spent quite a bit of time on it.
I did thumb nails and a 3 value notan. When I actually got into the values, I pretty much ignored the notan. I at first thought I wanted the dark value on the right to just be against the light values. But, it didn't actually feel right in the main drawing. So I darkened the whole right side and blended the bottom of the beard into the dark right side.
I had a lot of trouble with the eye on the right. It still could be better. But, it's been sprayed with fixative, so it's staying the way it is.
Also, looking at the photograph, I think the darks could be darker.

I spent a fair amount of time on level 1. I did three drawings on three different types of papers - white, gray and black. On the white paper I used graphite with white charcoal for the highlight. Not that you can tell, the light areas are all washed out in my scan. On the gray paper I used graphite and white charcoal. On the black paper I used white charcoal. That was fun, but messy.
The graphite on white paper, I used a blending stump. Ack, what a mistake, After that, I went over the whole drawing again with pencil. Some light areas look blotchy because of that. (Not that you can tell from the scan.)
I did the level 2 drawings smaller because of the time constraints. I mostly less prioritized getting shadows down. I felt really rushed working on these. Again, my scanner bleached out the lights. I wished I had done them on the gray toned paper.

Finally watching the critiques - the last couple of months have been crazy. Thank-you Stan for your input. I will be practicing this more. A lot more.

Here are my level 1 and level 2 assignments. Notes are on the images. Except I forgot to number all the thumbnails on the level 2 assignments. The flowers are from a picture I had taken a while ago. The apples, I did from life.

I think I needed a lot more time with this assignment. And, just as I'm posting here I see I actually have one more day.
Well, anyway all I got done was level 2. I did it digitally this time. My scanned in pencil sketches seem so light when I post them.
Black sketches are cleaned up drawings. Red sketches are my messy working it out sketch.

Here are my level 1 torso boxes. Hopefully I can get the level 2 drawings done in the next day or two.
Just finished the level 2 drawings. With this assignment, I'm not sure which was more difficult, level 1 or level 2.
