Follow the same workflow from the demos: build the mannequin, add folds on top, then light those forms. You have two options for how to approach it.
Option 1: Take 4-6 existing drapery studies you've already drawn (mannequins or drapery with the surfaces already worked out) and add shading to them.
Option 2: Start 2-4 from scratch using new references, drawing the mannequin, the drapery, and the lighting all fresh. More work, but it drills the full process.
As you shade, focus on separating light from shadow, then use edge quality to describe how the surface turns and what form is underneath.

I feel so out of control when I work digitally, I haven't yet managed to find a workflow or brush settings that mimic traditional very well
After changing things up and working on other things, I came back to it and here we are.

Adding drapery is definitely more relaxing and fun when the mannequin construction is strong. Feel like there is more left side of the brain working when drapery comes into play and if the mannequin is week then the left side checks out..😅
Been ill this past week, but wanted to submit something at least, so I poured my focus into one drawing and took it from start to finish. I kept Michael’s feedback from last time in mind and focused on varying my line weight, although some of that might have gotten lost under all the shading. 🤣🤣
heres my submission 😖 would love to do one more but my brains cooked, deep fried and ready to serve 🧠😂. Looks like I’m leaving many things in the dark and the curtain confused me so much 😵💫
Michael thank you. I did your figure and construction courses and it has helped me improve my speed and accuracy a lot. Now you’ve done the same for drapery. Drapery was always on my list but there were always other things I needed to learn. But you did all the work of research for us. Now, Instead of winging it ( which always takes forever) I have a procedure that makes it so much easier and faster and better.

I worked these all up from the manikin. There were definitely a few where I struggled to identify a clear direction for the studio lighting, especially for 3,6,and 7. For 5-8 I was trying to be conscience about simplifying. About half way through the drapery for 8, I realized I didn’t quite have the manikin right but I didn’t want to go back to redo it so I continued as it was.
My other[ observation doing these is how much faster I work through the whole process after a few months of practice. I think some of these including the shading were faster to do than the early simplified fold exercises.
I ended up just doing these from scratch. My rendering skills are something I've been trying to work on lately but it's slow going. Some of these I like but others not so much. Can't wait to see the critique video to see where I can improve.
Here is my assignment: I started from scratch using the new references.
I still have some difficulties with the Z shapes on boots, I can't manage them right. I hope that during the critique videos to see some of them drawn by Michael.
It was definitely a challenge. I tried as most as possible to "engineer" what I was seeing and simplify it, but easier said than done. The fact that there was multiple light directions and quite some details in the references provided made for a good exercise... I felt a bit lost at some points, and in those moments I tried to rely as least as possible on the reference and imagine the volumes and motion I would see. I'll definitely continue to practice this !

My submissions! I shaded 2 existing studies and did 3 new ones of ladies from different media I like! I did my best to simplify everything but it was difficult resisting the call of the detail abyss. It really is challenging to decide how to edit to make everything clear and readable --- definitely something I need to work on! That being said this assignment was a lot of fun, I've always been really intimidated by shading so this feels like a personal win haha
My attempts at shading. Six old drawings were shaded, and six completely new mannequins with drapery were created. Sometimes I feel like I’m still copying too often. I know the figures aren’t perfect, even though I spent a lot of time on them.
Here are my studies for this section. I kept the line drawing alongside the shaded version to show the process.

Well, I think I have overcooked these and seem to have forgotten how to draw noses and grown an arm! In spite of all that probably enjoying the drawing too much. Sorry Michael. Four from scratch.
