Good afternoon or morning depending on where you are, I know this is literally last minute, but regardless, for this month's Proko challenge I decided create a cyberpunk movie titled "The Celestials'" which primarily focuses on the aspects of rebellion against authority. It begin on a space rig where one of the many unfortunate characters takes an unexpected opportunity to escape the powerful machine. In time the characters begin to fade into an alternate reality which is their actual reality and come to the conclusion that the world they previously lived in was a simulated computer game all-along.

Hi everyone! This is my submission for this great challenge. I created a poster for a history- war- drama film. History is a topic of great interest to me. The movie “1821” is about the Greek war for Independence, one of the most heroic and bloody struggles for independence, any people has ever waged. This was the revolution of the Romantic Age, inspiring painters, poets and patriots the world over, fired as much by Lord Byron ringing words and Delacroix’s brilliant paintings as by Greece’s seemingly hopeless plight. A conflict that stimulated the fall of the Ottoman Empire and shaped what we know as the Western World. The app that I used is Procreate.

Update 3: So, this is nowhere near as complete as I thought it would be at this point, but I will be done by this weekend and ready for final submission. I have changed up the colors that I originally thought I would go with and pretty much just sticking to a basic color palette. I have to learn perspective better and how to add 'volume'? so things and people don't look so flat. In the end I am struggling as this piece isn't much better than I would expect from a kid, but I am reminding myself that a kid and I are at the same artistic level, so to get over myself and keep putting in the time. Speaking of time, that has been a bigger limitating factor than I originally thought. So, I am currently trying to bend and shift my energies and schedule to make time to practice and to work on fundamentals. I think this will be my last update until final submission which should be between Friday and Saturday night CST.

Hey Sam! My quick tip would be to try to think about value (light/dark) over colour. If you squint your eyes, your main character's clothing really disappears into the background, so make sure that your values contrast against the background colors you choose. The other thing is just to remember that things in the foreground generally have higher contrast and more detail (where the focus is) and less contrast and less detail as things get further away! Don't stress, just keep at it!

Hey there, I did the poster in A4 Format (Landscape) which was not the resolution that was mentioned in the guidelines ( Unfortunately I realized this mistake today when I was going to submit my work ) Just wanted to know if that would be okay @Kristian Nee . Thanks

Hey, I think it might work. I'm not sure how strict @Karla Ortiz will be with judging, but I'd say to change it. Could you post it in this thread so I can take a look?

Do our submissions have to match the size specification exactly or can they just be at the appropriate ratio to scale up, or some 'close enough' point? Just want to know how much work I have to do as I've realised my image is quite small relative to that...

Hey, sorry for the late reply! Ideally, yes. Close enough can work but keep in mind that Karla is a pro and will be judging this challenge as if she were an art director. If you are serious about pursuing art professionally, I'd recommend getting into the habit of following the prompt as closely as possible. That being said, if you've already created an image and you're not sure it can be better then stick with what you have.

If someone delivers 2 posters, 1 main work and an alternate, would these second work be accounted for? I have 2 ideias that compliment each other and was hoping i could deliver them both for the challenge.

Hey! sorry for the late reply! That's a great question. Do you mean like a sequel to your movie poster? If it's two images that count as 1 submission, include both in your final submission.

Hey proko! I'm having a burning question: what are the texts you guys mentioned in the prompt? What are the specific texts that one has to include in their final submissions? Secondly , I've actually already polished up my final work, yet I've just realised that there's a specification for the size of the piece. As such, is there any way that the competition will allow entries which deviate from the required format? Thank you!

Hey, sorry for the late reply! The text we talked about is the movie title, awards, credits, ect... It's not required, but I suspect it'll give you more points with Karla if you have some cool fonts going on. In terms of the specific specifications, my personal opinion is to not deviate as much as you can. More so for yourself, than to win the challenge. I took a look at your piece, and it does seem like it's "close enough". But in the case of this being a professional job, if you were asked to do one thing, and delivered close but not quite, especially with dimensions, you'd be asked to change it. @Karla Ortiz is a pro, and she will be judging like a real art director.

Hello... Sonthis poster should be on our own life.. So I'm thinking to portray my current condition... I'm super enthusiastic towards art since my childhood and rightnow I'm 22 and i wanted to join Art college but due to some personal problem and some financial problems i couldn't join...so I'm learning Art from YouTube and keep getting inspiration from various Artist..my current goal is to become a successful Artist not by certificate or degree papers... But the skill and real knowledge... So this scenario I'll be taking as a main plot of my movie... With some fantasy characters too... So in movie.. There will be one magical brush and if you can that brush you will get the power of universe... Means whatever you draw that will become real.. Or as erase the real thing too... So me as a leading character trying to get that brush but it's not easy.. To reach ti the brush I'll have to defeat some devil's (The problem or struggle that I'm facing in my life) and than finally after lots of hardwork and adventure I'll get that brush.... So the movie poster also show the kind of last scene.... Or in poster I'll be like... Don't get a story but get the idea of story...so I'm thinking to do something like that.... 🤪.... Plz plz feedback or react on this idea..... Thanksssssomuch

I would design the poster to show what the brush can do. Like a character drawing on a wall a 2d picture and parts of it are merging out into the 3D world. That’s the only idea that pops into my head. It sounds like green lantern but with a brush, so maybe check out some green lantern covers?

You don't need to setup your canvas so it prints the size of a movie poster

With this being a learning experience for me as well as for fun, I want to document my processes and development thinking patterns. Concept art for me is a recent lightbulb in my brain and hobby I want to pursue for personal art reasons and directions (mostly along the lines of world building and story telling for myself and others interested in this type of stuff). As you can plainly see in my description of what I am really trying to do is still being defined, explored and yeah I’m a lost excited puppy in the rain here. So, I am looking for generic feedback and would welcome focused feedback if you can see me struggling with a theme or a technique that I keep coming back to. With that out of the way…   As a forward note: I am using Procreate and an app called Pose. Will update as I move forward with any other major apps I may put to use.   Day 1, Step 1. Figuring out what my movie’s genre will be. I play in a LARP (well did before this whole Covid thing) called Dystopia Rising. It is a dystopian, future horror and zombie full immersion weekend long LARP held several months out of the year. My character Remington has a fake MtG card designed after him with a great photo of me in my LARP gear and an awesome saying for flavor text that nails my character. Since I really like horror fantasy and dystopian science fiction, I figured that is the direction I want to take my movie genre in.   Day 1, Step 2. Figuring out overall concept design for movie poster with the genre in mind. I looked up zombie horror movie posters and found 3 that I really liked that had some aspect I really liked about it. I wanted it to really challenge me, bring in techniques and such I barely recognize as a beginner, but want to push myself into learning. My overall design which you will see below I think captures the feel I’m looking for and what aspects of the original posters I like. The “look” of I Am Legend with background elements from both that and Zombie Apocalypse Now and foreshadows and text blocks of Zombieland 2. Day 1, Step 3. Quick line art and some color blocking. Nope, probably looks like scribble to everyone else, but I got the idea of what I would like where, the color range and potential palette. I forgot to add one aspect I wanted to, so will correct soon.   Day 1 Technical Issues… so on my iPad Pro I can’t design a 27”x41” canvas in Procreate. I don’t have enough memory maybe? I dunno. So, I halved it to 13.5” x 20.5” and intend on “blowing it up” to twice the size down the road before final submission. But for now, will be working on a half-sized canvas.   Here are my next immediate plans, where I’ll execute most of this (hopefully) and will update in the next day or so.   Step 4. Perspective layout. The street continues behind Remington and his puppy into a vanishing point that isn’t “seen” by the viewer. Same with some city buildings, a river, and a falling bridge. In the very back background, are more buildings. All of this needs to be outlined in Perspective View in Procreate to give me the lines to use moving forward.   Step 5. Using Pose, I will put together the mannequin of Remington and import him into the foreground of the canvas on a layer above the perspective layer. I am learning how to draw faces (Loomis method) and starting to do 1st grade anatomy drawings, so Pose is a shortcut/crutch that is allowing me to jump ahead of my actual skill level by taking care of base body language positioning.   Step 6. Using a spare layer that I might even delete almost immediately, put down color blocking again, to see if things look OK. Will take notes for the final color palette.   Step 7. Post my next update and read and appreciate any feedback I get before moving on. I am keeping myself open to the fact that I may have to redo or rethink something during the next steps. Ok that’s it for now, will report again in a day or two when these steps are done!

I expected to be done with these steps by now, but work last week and a long weekend caught up to me. This is what I have so far. I'm learning I need to learn a lot about perspective and figure drawing. I'm struggling right now because I know my work looks childish, like what I would expect one of my grandkids to come up with. Then I take a deep breath and remind myself, this is a skill like any other and we all start from roughly the same points when it comes to drawing. Then I tell myself to shut up and go through the paces. I appreciate being part of a community that despite my newbness, you all are encouraging and kind. Thankyou. And here is my progress - or lack thereof - so far.

Thanks for sharing this, it is so interesting! I am also a fan of dystopian future settings and I love the idea to make your LARP character the protagonist :D It is fascinating to see how other artist's processes are, can't wait to see more! I just posted mine and oh my the last days were intense. It is really hard to not get lost in the critical view. I am more of an explorer, meaning I don't plan so much, I explore while I draw. And so tweaking and improving is all the process. Until the tweaking is not improving any more but making it worse. I got so lost at that point but now I decided it is finished. Thank you so much for encouraging me, I am really looking forward to your finished piece!

There are a few of us who are doing this for nothing more than sport, as our first mile marker, or even a chance to win a random course that will help our skills. So please, come join us. I've already in my mind dubbed us the Beginner's Team and we're to have fun, make memories and learn. Emphasis though on having fun.

It seems like you and me are not the only ones who felt a bit overwhelmed but also are very exited about the challenge. But I have to say your stuff is amazing! Like truely amazing. Some of your album drawings are already in a great style for such a poster! Seriously I want to see your version please :D
