It's easy to make curves feel too loose or bulbous.
The block-in and enveloping techniques simplify subjects into straight lines. This builds a solid scaffolding for your drawing, giving you control over the structure of curves before adding final details.
This is new to me. I found it challenging. I haven't tried this technique from a life drawing study yet. Gulp, I think I need to practice a bit more before I attempt that.
