Thank you for creating such a detailed demonstration. It really helped to see the actual object you were basing your drawing on; it showed why you made certain decisions regarding line thickness and value, keeping it close in design to the original object or adding a little more flair (such as to the leaves and some petals). As a beginner, I am only starting to see all of the little details and nuances and the vast choices one has to make. Being able to see your reference object really made a difference in this demo.
LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In this full lesson, I demonstrate my three-phase process for drawing a flower from start to finish. You'll see how I use the blocking technique to simplify complex petals into manageable shapes before adding refined contours. I'll then show you how to add value, texture, and detail to create depth and dimension. You'll learn to control your line quality to create a clear focal point, making your drawing more dynamic and interesting to look at.

Simplifying a flower's complex curves starts with straight lines. Use a block-in technique to establish the basic form of the petals. This underdrawing acts as a simple guide, allowing you to add the final, flowing contours and details with more confidence.

I followed Brent's method of using an envelope to start then, shaping parts out, adding details and values. I did not realize the variety in values when choosing the reference photo bc I was focusing more on shapes and lines of the flower. I kind of feel like this ended up being a value study, but I was not as consistent as I should have been. I did like how the flower came more to life as I worked on it. Any suggestions on how I can improve it are welcome.
