Build a Character with History in Every Detail
A finished character isn't created by adding more detail. It's created by making the right decisions at every stage. From the story behind the design, to the way the final light catches the skin, fabric, hair, and jewelry. In this course, I'll show you how I think through those decisions while creating Tenzin, a realistic tribal female character built for a cinematic presentation in Unreal Engine 5.
From Blockout to Detailed Model
We start with a brief, references, and a mood board—not as a formality, but as the foundation for everything that follows. I'll show you how a character's environment, personality, and backstory should shape the shapes, materials, and details you choose. This is the same thinking you need on a real production, when you're handed limited concept art and have to develop the rest yourself.



From there, I'll break down the reasoning behind my full workflow across Maya, ZBrush, Marvelous Designer, Mari, Substance Painter, XGen, and Marmoset. You'll see how I establish strong proportions before chasing detail, how I design clothing and accessories so they feel intentional instead of decorative, and how I build skin and fabric textures that hold up under close scrutiny. More importantly, you'll understand why each of those choices gets made, so you can apply the same judgment to characters that look nothing like mine.
The part that ties everything together is Unreal Engine 5. This is where the sculpt, textures, and hair either come together into one convincing image, or fall apart under real lighting. I'll walk you through building flexible material instances, developing the eyes and hair shaders, and using lighting and cameras to control mood—plus setting up a simple rig and animated camera shots for a finished, presentation-ready result.
Who I Made This For
This instruction was put together for artists who want to build complete, realistic 3D characters instead of stopping after the sculpt.
It’s especially useful if you’re interested in character modeling, digital doubles, cinematic art, real-time production, game development, look development, or portfolio work. You don’t need to follow this exact character. The workflow can be adapted to creatures, fantasy characters, game-ready assets, film characters, and cinematic portrait projects. Remember, the tools change project to project, but the thinking behind proportion, material, and light doesn't.
If you’re already comfortable with the basics of Maya or ZBrush, you’ll still be able to focus on the decisions behind the process. If you’re still developing your skills, you’ll get a clear example of how the different stages connect (from design and modeling to texturing, hair, materials, and presentation).
I’ll also talk about the practical side of the workflow: when to move between programs, how to check your work, how to keep materials flexible, and how to make choices based on the final image rather than working in isolation.
By the end of this course, you won't just have a finished character. You'll have a repeatable process for turning a loose idea into a polished, cinematic-quality asset, and a much sharper eye for what separates a good model from one that truly feels alive. You should be comfortable navigating both before you start. I move fast between programs throughout the workshop, and while I do walk through my personal interface setup, this isn't a software-basics course. If you already know your way around the tools and want to see how a professional pipeline actually gets built, you're in the right place.
I work in Maya, ZBrush, Marvelous Designer, Mari, Substance Painter, Unreal Engine 5, and Marmoset Toolbag. I also use a couple of plugins along the way that speed things up, but I'll always point out where a free or stock alternative gets you a similar result. You don't need every single one to follow along.
Tenzin is the character we build together, but the thinking behind her isn't specific to her at all. The decisions I walk you through like how to read a brief, how to balance detail with silhouette, how to build materials that hold up under real lighting all apply directly to creatures, game characters, digital doubles, and your own original designs.
Both, really. We build the character with the same care I'd bring to a film project, but the hair, materials, and final presentation are built for Unreal Engine 5 with real-time performance in mind. That means hair cards, efficient material instancing, and texture sets that don't fall apart the moment you drop them into a game engine.
Deep. Hair takes up a large part of the workshop: cards, braids, eyelashes, materials, and testing everything in Marmoset as we go instead of guessing until the final render. If real-time hair has always felt like a mystery, this is where that starts to click.
Not quite, the rig I set up is built to support presentation and a few animated camera shots, not full production animation. It's there to help the character come alive in the final render, not to teach you character animation from scratch.
This is a full pipeline course . It includes the brief and mood board all the way through sculpting, texturing, hair, and final look development in Unreal. It's not a weekend project, and I'd rather you take your time with each stage than rush to the finish line.
