Gesture drawing is a fundamental skill and one that many artists find difficult to approach, but in this course, I'll be showing you how I tackle this subject and give you everything you need to draw gestures with ease.

Would you recommend using your book, "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention", as a supplement to this course?
Steven Michael Hampton
It can't hurt if you want an overview of the whole process I'm following. The Gesture course itself will only cover the first chapter in the book.

Buongiorno Maestro, sono intenzionato ad acquistare questo interessantissimo corso. Volevo chiederLe se era previsto la correzione di alcuni disegni che realizzerò durante la visualizzazione del corso. Grazie mille e buona giornata

Hi do we have to know some basic anatomy for this course? In your gesture videos on YouTube, you mentioned different parts of the body (femur, lumbar, etc.) while doing gesture drawings.
Steven Michael Hampton
I don't think you do. I cover the basics of what you need to know in the course. No prior knowledge is necessary.

Quick question: do you suggest working on an iPad, graphite and paper, or ink and paper?
Steven Michael Hampton
I honestly don't think it makes a difference. I'd go with whatever you enjoy using most. I think the concepts apply across the board.

Do you also go over how gravity affects the body in this course?
Steven Michael Hampton
I do mentioned the idea of a center of gravity when discussing balance but it isn't an extensive lecture.
@gogeta2000
By any chance, Mr. Hampton, will you have any anatomy course?
@bharath_goku
Sir i'm planning to purchase a course and i'm getting confused which one i need to purchase first as a beginner ? The gesture course or the Introduction to figure construction which one should i start learning first ?
Steven Michael Hampton
I think the best order for the courses would be Gesture, Intro to Figure Construction, and then Head Drawing and Construction. Hope this helps!

Hey dude, this course helped me a lot, like A LOT! I learnt how to make the gestures correctly, rather than just looking at a reference and... FAILING. The gestures were wonderful, but I don't know how to draw realistically - I draw more anime-ish style, so I wanted to ask if you could make like an anime lesson. Oh yeah btw, here's the drawing I made from ur lesson

Hi, you're a great instructor! I've just finished the introduction to figure construction drawing course. How the gesture part of that course differs from this one? I've done a lot of gesture based on the approach described in the figure construction and I wonder if there's an added value with this one.
Steven Michael Hampton
Hey! Thanks so much. So, they're pretty similar approaches to be honest. The Gesture course is just a more focused look with more attention given to the set up, types of poses, and exercises. If you're comfortable with the overview of gesture given in the construction course it may not add anything for you.
Antonio Komadina
we need an anatomy course to tie it all together-gesture,figure,head-anatomy..we just need it
Stan Prokopenko
Good news! Hampton just recorded the first part of his upcoming anatomy course at our Studio last week!! Please be patient though, there will be some editing time. We're still finishing up his Drapery course which is coming out next.
Go Iwabuchi
Mr Hampton's got an anatomy playlist on his youtube channel btw

This might be a very silly question - which course is meant to be taken first - the introduction to figure construction course or this one on gesture? I consider myself to be a complete noob in figure drawing. My goal is to be able to draw stylised figures for illustrations (i.e. draw humans that look ...cartoonish maybe, but have good proportions that look kinda realistic). I'm currently taking the heads construction course and I'm blown away with just how high quality every single lesson is. Thank you Michael and the whole team that made it so accessible for all of us. EDIT: Dang! I realize that I've started the courses in wrong order. Based on this comment (https://www.proko.com/s/F6bV) I gather the correct order is: - Intro to figure drawing - Gesture - Head construction I'm enjoying the head construction course far too much now to abandon it midway so I'll probably finish it (and maybe revisit it again after gesture).
Steven Michael Hampton
I think any order is fine. You should always go with where your interest is, however, the most logical order would be Gesture Drawing Intro to Figure Construction Head Construction

Hello is this course good for people who are absolute beginners? like just getting into art
Kimberly Lewis
The course is useful for learners at any level, but it’s mainly aimed at beginner and intermediate students. So yes! And keep in mind we have a 30 day refund policy, if for some reason this course, or any course, on the Proko site is not a good fit!
Kevin Riedel
Hey Michael, I'd like to ask you something. Did your Head Construction Course (and doing it over and over), now I purchased this course - eventually I see you as my favourite Teacher on Proko. On your YT Channel you got about 3 videos on animal drawing and here you said, that you really like drawing them. So my question is: Is there an option, that you will make an 'Animal construction course' on Proko? Man you really got a synergy with the Proko original production. I see the difference between your first course, and then the head construction that you guys made a proko production. And now this one. Your courses get even better with proko. I like that nerdy way of thinking about construction, that you have. So I think, the next step could be the same thing on animal construction. There are the books 'The Weatherly guide to draw animals' (and another for cats), that's kinda like your teaching/construction method. But an online course is always better then a book! PS: The head construction course made me speechless! Regards, Kevin
Steven Michael Hampton
Hey Kevin! Thanks so much! Wow, really appreciate that feedback. So glad you've found the courses useful! No plans on Animal Anatomy or Construction at the moment. I did just film a Drapery course with Proko that will come out at some point this year or next. And yes! Totally agree. The editing and course organization is fantastic. I'm grateful to work with them. Have you checked out Jon Kuo's gumroad lectures and courses on animals? They're some of favorite on the subject. Thanks again!

When all the lessons will be available?
Sean Ramsey
All the lessons should be out around the end of April
Damon Harris
When will all the lessons be available to stream? All lessons be released on 02/03/2025. We try to release all lessons by 12pm PT on the day of release. Thanks for being patient
Jenny Driessen
Hello. Will we be notified when then next lesson comes out so we don't have to keep checking? Thank you.
Sean Ramsey
If you are following the course/purchased the course, you should get an email shortly after each new lesson is released. If not, it might be in your spam box? The latest email was titled "Proportions Critique and Advanced Chart Drawing" - did you receive that one?
@ortizdaking
To be honest, I’m not too happy in the way that this course is being handled. There’s no schedule to see when lessons will be uploaded and 2 lessons over 3 weeks is unacceptable considering the presale starting date. I always thought the lesson were being created while waiting for the release date on February, but I guess I was wrong.
Sean Ramsey
Hey, sorry that's my bad. I'm an editor and also set the schedule. We were trying to make sure everyone had a chance to submit their assignments for critique and we didn't want to jump ahead while students are working on the assignment since this is pre-requisite knowledge. In good news, we are set to have 2 primary lessons a week consistently for the rest of the course, though weeks where a critique is coming out will stay at 1 video for that week for the above reasons. I agree that I should have stacked the previous lessons all in one week though vs the way we set them. I hope that helps shed light on the behind the scenes stuff!
Steven Michael Hampton
Sorry to hear you're unhappy. All lessons have been recorded minus the critique videos. Please know that Proko does have a no questions asked refund policy.
