Heya, here's my thumbnails for The Entity. I focused more on the unshackled version of this creature, trying to make a blend between armor, abomination flesh. and shadow. I dig the versions where one shoulder has been sort of mutated, but I also quite like the hooded versions. I'd like to hear your opinions as well. Thank you <3

ASSIGNMENTS

Now it's your turn to practice the thumbnailing process. This assignment will help you generate multiple ideas quickly and effectively.

Your Task

Choose one of the 4 character descriptions provided below and follow these steps.

  1. Create 7 to 10 thumbnails for the description you selected.
  2. Focus on creating a variety of ideas. Each thumbnail should feel like a brand new concept.
  3. Pay close attention to the silhouette. Make sure the changes from one thumbnail to the next are significant enough to create a unique and readable shape.

Character descriptions

Maren Asando - For this quest we need a character that the player meets and is trained by before heading into a dungeon. She's an archeologist that specializes in finding, exploring and excavating ancient magical ruins. She is a natural linguist that can learn any language in just a few days, and can decode writing and hieroglyphics that have been lost for thousands of years. She has a small otter (or whatever, a small cute animal) companion named Glub that she uses to scout out dangerous ruins and her linguistic skills are strong enough that it seems like she can talk directly to it in a combination of squeaks, whistles and simple english. She has a deep distrust and suspicion of the academic elite and hates having to prove her work to them. She is fastidious, meticulous and can come off as aloof - but that's to mask a deep passion she has for her work; she doesn't want to get hurt again by people she trusts. She's the one who teaches the player to decode the puzzle runes that are scattered throughout the dungeon, and then accompanies them through, providing tips and pointing out secrets.  Eventually the player can recruit her as a companion.

The Entity - The final boss in the Prison of the Broken Sword, The Entity was imprisoned by a dynasty of warrior-kings who have since fallen from grace and nearly passed into memory. The Entity is chained to a wall in a full body restraint system that was repurposed from a suit of armor. The Entity's eyes and mouth are visible through the mask but nothing else is. No one ever sees it moving (but it definitely moves) and only occasionally do you hear it breathing, and patches of moss cover its armor. Every so often a curious visitor will receive a fragment of information, delivered in a low raspy tone that is somewhere between garbled prophecy and insane wisdom. It only seems to eat rodents as evidenced by the piles of bones around it and offerings of food and drink rotting in piles. The player can only defeat The Entity when they reassemble the Broken Sword and use it to open the locks that bind it. During the boss fight, The Entity uses the huge brass locks fastened to it's chains in wide swinging attacks that the player can get inside of and stab at weak points in the prison armor.

Mikkles - This is a type of creature we're adding to the upcoming DLC (downloadable content/expansion pack). Since the theme of the DLC is around material transmutation (but we can only afford one new enemy type), we want them to be usable in a variety of situations but also be able to provide a bunch of different material drops when the player defeats them. The idea is they are sort of furry goblins that come in all shapes and sizes. Kind of like angry raccoons?  We want them to have a manic energy and are sort of unpredictable, and they can use the new traversal system we are adding - so we see them climbing up walls and dropping down on the player, or maybe rolling into balls or something. Scrambling up ledges, climbing vines - you've seen the demo so you know that this is a pretty versatile system and we want to get an idea of what's possible, so some action shots and behavior sketches would be great just to get the designers and animators thinking outside of the box. This DLC is a little more zany than we're used to doing so we're ok with a more slapstick approach. Consider a bunch of different silhouettes so we can make different character classes so it's easy for the player to make them out at a distance and decide how they want to deal with each group.

Inkpot Sam - We need a character to introduce the player to our Book Making system - the general idea is that he's wiry and tall, but sort of got a bent over look from hunching over a writing desk, copying scrolls and various tomes. That's a kind of classic nerd/crafter look, but we could also go for a brusque craftsman look but he has to be appealing so that players want to listen to him and take his advice, like he has a natural warmth and seems wise. We also wanted to capture some ideas for the Book Crafting Workbench, it should look like a cluttered desk with pots of glue, inkpots of various shapes and colors, partially bound books and different embossing tools, brushes and pens, something that gives it life and sense of character that would be appealing to support players that also like crafting.

You have until 11/29/25 to submit your art for possible inclusion in the critique video!

I might have gone a bit too ambitious here, but they all seemed so much fun. So I tried to do them all, with the aim of making them work in the same kind of world. We’ll see if I can keep up with it as we get further into the course. Ps. All the drawings here are so cool! I wish I could comment on all of them, but there’s just no way I can :(

Hey, here are the thumbnails of my entities. These are mostly focused on the unchained version. In the end i tested if the locks were different shapes like a mace and a spear. :)

These look awesome. I really like how the silhouettes are reading.

I know I am going to get clowned on for drawing an actual stick figure but I wanted to make sure I got a submission in today. I tried to do concepts for mikkles.
Angie Guyton
I've found the community on here to be pretty positive--and what you're calling a stick figure just looks like a good gesture drawing :) Mikkles is a fun one for sure.
Adrian Potato
Here is my Mikkles. Hope its not to rough :P
Mikhail Voroshylov
Inkpot Sam. Sorry, no excuses, that's all I pushed out of myself.
Dave Greco
great sketches! I love the movement you have here in all of these.

Hello, i choosed Maren Asando. as we have no context in the universe I've probably gone too far in the "brand new concept" way haha. I hope it's still work !

Wonderful! I like E, I and M the most!
Rixt Heerschop
I picked Inkpot Sam. The workbench especially was a real challenge for me, I became painfully aware of my lack of experience in designing props! But definitely good to get out of the comfort zone :)

These are all great!

Heres my take on The Entity. Was a fun prompt to work with. However I was torn if I wanted to keep it more humanoid or more monstrous.
Dave Greco
Love the monster vibe with the ideas.. sometimes it's easier to think of something more humanoid since that's what we are used to.. so great to see you busting out of the box.

Amazing work, Kyle! These designs are mind-blowing
Linus Lehmann
Here is my attempt at the Mikkles! I had a lot of fun with the assignment!
Dave Greco
Love Mikkles!! Animal characters can be a challenge a lot but you managed to inject quite a bit of personality into these. Nice!
@chandrewsart
Tried out thumbnails for Maren Asando and the Entity!
Dave Greco
Way to tackle tons of different posing and the straight silhouettes work great also. Can't wait to dive into these further with the video review.
@brojang

smart to have the little silhouette too
@tess_eis
Hey! Amazing thumbnails so far! Here is my attempt with Maren Asando:
Dave Greco
i am IN LOVE with these designs.. you already have my mind brimming with ideas. Can't wait for the video review to dive in deeper!

aww the scardey-cat in E
Sewkhy Tan
Hello! here are my thumbnails for Maren Asando. I realized I was struggling with dynamic proportion and I tend to stick to a more realistic silhouette so this is my attempt to diversify it.
Dave Greco
Awesome variety, you tackle a bunch of different ideas in each one which is fantastic.
Ash

Aww I am partial to the bat in G and the invisible bear-cat in B

My fav pose here has to be the one with Maren trying to balance above some sort of dangerous pit, with a fat and skinny rat as weights. It's a fun exercise trying to intentionally keep it within a short window of time and not overdraw. Love so many of the submissions so far.
Dave Greco
Agreed that balance one is probably my favorite also. Could inject a ton of personality into that one.
Myles Goethe
Maren Asando thumbnails The Entity thumbnails Mikkles thumbnails I ran outta steam for the Inkpot Sam but I get better results from mileage!
Dave Greco
Nice work on tackling three of them! Yeah everytime I run out of steam on an idea and push a few more.. thats where some crazy magic happens. Psyched to dive into these.

Those look sick! D) From the Entity is really cool :D

Hi here`s some of my ideas on Entity thumbnails. I`ve realized that it is hard to be creative and it needs tons of practice. Also it is pretty hard to combine all the features that The Entity has.
Dave Greco
Being creative is a ton of work.. something a lot of non artists don't understand. You are doing it though! these ideas seem awesome and I could totally see a ton of these being brought up further.
Maxime Scheder
Here is my thumbnailing of Maren. It was a very good exercise, I realized how it's unnatural for me to explore very different ideas. I was stuck in a very narrow range and had to force myself to try different shapes. I think we kind of see it in the results, the characters look different but not crazily different. I had also difficulties to let go, trying to be loose. I have the impression that I'm not searching enough. I was often tempted to erase, but I believe it's the end of the ideation if you start doing that. It's a mindset, I guess it gets easier and easier as you practice it and you find what works for you...
Dave Greco
You may feel these are all very similar but from me taking a look at them, they seem very different and each bring the character into its own direction. Some days as an artist or character artist, its going to be tough and it takes a ton of digging to find the character but you are doing and rocking it.. love these.
@rupertdddd
my take on Inkpot Sam…
Dave Greco
Love the poses.. you can tell already by number 8 you were busting out of your comfort zone.. but thats where the magic is starting to really happen! That much of a hunch could make a writer on the team spin up with amazing ideas.
@gavinobrien32
Some thumbnails for the Entity
Dave Greco
Love how bolder and imaginative they get as you keep pushing more and more of them. 1-5 are great but you can really see the growth in 6+

Kassjan (Kass) Smyczek
Interesting posts of you all! I chose Maren Asando and focused on communicating different character treats. I think I neglected the equipment part a little too much, which would have helped to get more expresive silhouettes. I also always wanted Glub to be a strong contrast to the version of Maren.
Dave Greco
omggg amazing. I love a bunch of these.. can't wait for the video review / dive into these. amazing work!
@chandrewsart
I love the variety of personalities they have!
