I can only work on this on weekends so it is taking me a while. It's very challenging. The face is coming along but the shirt looks very messy, I scraped off the background because I didn't like what I did. I can't get the color of the blue/green ribbons for the medals unless I add the cobalt blue to my palette? I can see a spot on the neck that I need to fix. By now all the mixes are dried in the little cups so I will have to mix everything again. Any pointers for next weekend's session?

Here’s where I’m at so far. I didn’t bother with the background yet since the figure needs work I’m debating whether I should just scrap it and start over. as I progress farther in the painting, I start to lose the likeness. I’ve included the first assignment final photo here. I think the painting looks good, but the likeness is far gone. It’s been about 15 years since I painted and I’m trying to make up for a lost time.

yes, and anywhere you see a long hard line you need to try to break it up with some soft spots. Like the hard line all down the left side of face . Her right.

Progress on Softening for realism-would appreciate any comments you might have. Hair needs some work and not feeling great about clothing, but this is where I am at.

There is a some deviation from the reference going on here. I need to get you to see where you could get a more accurate version of her. Take the reference photo and put it next to your painting. Use rapid eye movement back and forth looking at just one part at a time. Do the eyes first. Once you see the difference, make a mental note and quickly fix it to match the photo closer. Do that with each feature. Use small enough brush to make you draw , not paint.
Moved onto this intermediate stage because I needed a little break from finalizing the first portrait. Still working on edges and shapes. Happy to hear any feedback.

You are not squinting for your values, or shadow patterns. Your shadows are too light and there is not enough contrast between light and shadow. Look the attached shot. Use rapid eye movement back and forth between your painting and the photo. Look at each part individually to check. Look at the nose in your painting then quickly look at the nose in the photo. back and forth. compare. train yourself to see where you are off and then fix it. Squint when you do this too.
