Fifth assignment! Had a lot of fun listening to Guillermo del Toro’s commentary on Crimson Peak. Luckily for me, he talked about costuming and silhouettes, among other things. The film has a ‘moths vs. butterflies’ overarching theme, so a lot of those motifs appear throughout the film’s visuals, including costumes. Loved how he described Lucille’s silhouette change near the end of the film - as she wasn’t hiding her true intentions, she spread her wings, like a moth flying. Haven’t found similar commentary on Mad Max: Fury Road (probably didn’t try hard enough!), so just had a great time rewatching and paying additional attention to the costuming details.

Alright well I kind of deviated from the instructions a bit. I only chose one piece of media and it wasn't even a film, but I was interested in how the costume design in Ghost of Tsushima reflected Jin Sakai's story arc and the way he is influenced by the other characters throughout the game. I never really noticed how much of each character's personality was communicated in their costuming until doing this exercise, and how cleanly each supporting character's influence maps onto Jin's armor sets as you progress. Really insightful exercise, I will definitely be doing this type of thing again sometime.

hi everyone ! back from a wonderful time in Silesia & the delights of original 19th century art by Wyspiański, Chełmoński, Malczewski & many more from the ‚Young Poland’ movement at Krakow & Wroclaw National Galleries, churches etc. - the quality & level of craft are simply amazing. For homework I’ve analyzed three main characters from ‚Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ (Ang Lee, art direction Tim Yip), probably my favourite movie - rich on every level. I hope at least some of my scratching makes any sense. We have: 1 ). Li Mu Bai - a warrior who has disavowed violence but breaks away from his search for meditative enlightenment, thus setting the events of the story in motion. 2 ). Jen Yu - rich daughter, about to be forced into marriage - rebellious & antagonizing just about everyone. 3 ). Shu Lien - private security & force for good, friend & almost lover to Li Mu Bai What is missing ? some refinement & a wealth of other archetypal characters - the lover, the evil stepmother, the policeman and other representatives of society & underworld

Taking the time to analyze and appreciate the my favorite manga character sure was a lot of. I absolutely love the the flamboyant fashion style of all the jojo character as well ass the rugged street fashion style of dorohedoro. I spent the most amount of time at the last one(ramlethal) since i think she has one of the coolest and clearest designs.

I took a while figuring out what to do for my assignment and somehow, The Green Knight came to mind as an interesting one to look at. Actually sitting down to do the analysis made me realize how good the visual and design work is in this film. I feel like I'm not quite seeing the basic shapes beyond how they contribute to the visual composition leading the eye.

This assignment was so I couldn't help myself and did a little more exploration! This time from one of my favorite shows to come out recently --- Andor! I love the idea of a star wars show showing the gritty side of the rebels without the force or the lightsabers, more the reality of people living under the empire than the glory of the chosen heroes fighting against it.

Probably i went a bit overboard lol, but it was a very funny assignment :D Since i basically covered an entire trilogy with Back to the Future, i wanted to make something else too and i went with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and as a second bonus i did some studies of Final Fantasy VIII. The hardest part for me was to search for material to learn more about the characters and their costumes, because most of the time i couldn't find much... so i tried my best understanding myself by analyzing. So i want to ask: what to do when you can't find much or anything? Also since you, Michael, are an historian, are there any good websites (or even books, encyclopedias, etc.) that you can suggest to look for with historical illustrations? Or even simply for researching stuff like this? Anyway, what i tried to understand from BTTF, since i didn't find much was: - Marty shapes are the hero ones, being almost always square-ish. - I noticed on Marty a recurring pattern in his outfits. He always wear clothes with sleeves that have different color from the torso, even on the "Life Preserver Outfit" it looks like that. - And the thing i like the most about Marty is that he is always out of place with his outfits and it really shows that he doesn't belong where he goes in time. - Doc most of the time wears a coat, i presumed because it gives him the characteristic of the scientist and the smart one. - But also the coat gives Doc a resembling shape of a triangle, i thought that is because he is somewhat a guardian, a mentor and a protector to Marty. - For the Tannen family there is not much to say, they are all basically the brute shape. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a bit simpler to research and what i found was: - Clementine's hair changes to show at which point the relationship with Joel was. - Green for when they meet and their relationship starts ("The Beginning"). - Red for when their relationship is passionate, fun and intense ("The Flourishing"). - Orange for when their relationship is not going well and they constantly fight ("The Declining"). - Blue for when their relationship is over and symbolize the sadness, but also the start of another beginning ("The Ending and the new Beginning"). - As for Joel what i realized was that he is always dressed with black or dark outfits, maybe it's because he feels all the emotions and so every "color" mixes into a black or just some kind of sadness and depression. Or most simply it's to make a contrast between him and Clementine's dresses being colorful. - The only time Joel is not in black is when he tries to recall his childhood without Clementine. Final Fantasy VIII is one of my favorite games and the character designs of Nomura Tetsuya are always unique! - Squall is the main character and one of the heroes of the story. He is a member of SeeD, a mercenary force for hire and they are requested for military questions, protecting people and killing mosters. The values of Squall's outfit makes a good focal point to his head or upper torso. - Seifer is the antagonist and rival to Squall, it's figure is mostly predominant and the one of a brute. - Ultimecia design is the one of a villainous lady. A mixture of dangerous shapes (since she is a powerful witch and sorcerer) with luxurious curves.

I love the costume design in Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein! There's so much cool symbolism. Victor's whole disheveled look and the red gloves symbolizing the blood on his hands. The unconventional patterns and hats he wears showing that he's a bit mad (or at least not like the other boys in a crazy way). The fact that his collar is not buttoned up in an era where propriety was very important and all other male characters are immaculately collared makes him stand out. I love the skeleton / organ motif in all of the clothes --- like the boning of Elizabeth's corset or the lung patterns on Victor's vests. Elizabeth in general is such a standout for me. She wears all these gauzy and flowy layers giving the impression she's never really "there." And the iridescent colours of her dresses resembling insects or beetles showing her fascination with life and her ultimate character arc (trying to keep this spoiler free!). And her cooler color palette meshes really well with the creature and not as well with the red of Victor showcasing the bond she has with him. Don't even get me started on her wedding dress! The gauzy layers, the corset that looks like a ribcage, and the bandages on her arm being a nod to the original bride of Frankenstein's costume! For the creature, I love that he starts out basically naked (wearing white) as a newborn and by the end of the movie he is swathed in all of these dark layers that he has gotten from different people on his travels. The change of light colors when he is young and innocent to dark colors after he has seen the world is fascinating. I just really love this movie y'all

Here’s my submission! I chose to study the One Piece live-action series. One Piece has been one of my favorite shows for a long time, and I got to know the Straw Hat crew through over 1,000 anime episodes. Analyzing their clothing made me realize that their costumes actually carry so much more story than I initially thought.

Here’s my submission. I’m analysing The East Palace, a K-series on Netflix. Watched it for the horror, stayed for the costumes 😍. This feels like a school project lol.

I don’t watch many movies, and I have never paid attention to the costumes. It occurred to me that *The Lord of the Rings* surely features some interesting costumes. The first challenge was finding usable photos. Most images showed only the torso or were mere silhouettes. I noticed that most of the heroes have a boxy physique, whereas the Elves and wizards wear flowing robes that create a triangular silhouette. The Orcs remind me of painted barbarians clad in armor bristling with sharp metal. While the humans' clothing resembles medieval attire, the Hobbits' outfits seem to belong to a later era.

This was a challenging exercise for me, especially the analytical part, so I tried to keep it simple: three words and one short sentence for each character. I chose two films I really enjoy and that I think will be useful references for a personal project I'm developing. For the Akira bonus, I took the “go crazy” part quite literally and just had fun exploring shapes, perspective and composition.

Alright, here is my take. For the more "realistic" part I choose to go for pulp fiction. I tried as best I as I could to find a "reason" for the costumes. Then I wanted to explore more in the comic realm with some studies from the Treacherous Indies. It was a fun exercise, trying to see the costume as a whole and not separate from the character, focusing on bigger ideas.

This was a lot of fun. I chose Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul and Star Wars for my two studies. I tried to not be so precious with them and keep it sketchy like in the video examples. The website said my files were too big to attach so I took screenshots of them. I'm hoping that doesn't negatively affect the quality too much. If there's a better way to show them, let me know.

I chose Shutter Island for my first set. Really fun and challenging assignment. Never really watched movies and series from the costume designing perspective and how it affects the character so I feel like I am watching everything with a new pair of eyes :D

I think I choose very complex references :) really struggled with the wrapping of the folds and indicating the overlap in the folds propley with line, oh and also designing the folds because I think the way I draw the folds is to messy and random. I tried like three different approaches which is why the quality is so different in them and i think going the slow way of mannequin in red and folds with darker pen is better for clarity

Here are my sets from Dune and Prince of Persia movies. I really enjoied this assignment. For Dune I drew the main character Paul before going to Dune and after he joined the Fremens; I choose as antagonist a member of the Harkonnen family and the Bene Gesserit, this last in contrast with Paul's mother, Jessica. The last character was the princess Irulan, subdued to the will of her father, with this dress that express very much her lack of choices. For Prince of Persia I drew Dastan with his armor before being accused of murdering the king and his costume as fugitive. I did the same with Tamina: I drew the costume before being a fugitive and after. As antagonist I chose Nizam, the king brother and the real culprit of the murder.
