LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In this full lesson, I take the illustration from a rough sketch to a finished piece. I’m aiming for a nostalgic, vintage poster aesthetic, which means making bold choices like a blue horse and orange monkeys. You’ll see how I combine colored pencils for detailed rendering with alcohol markers to cover large areas efficiently. This mixture helps create a stylized look that feels like a toy come to life.

I also show you how to handle the background to make the characters pop, using a dark frame and dust particles. We discuss color coding, balancing busy areas with negative space, and using Micron pens to refine the shapes. You will learn how to manage a limited color palette and mix media to get a polished, professional result.

You don't need a full rainbow to make your drawing pop. Limiting your palette to just two or three colors forces you to make smarter design choices that keep the whole piece balanced. If you are unsure about values, master the black and white version before you start adding those specific accents.
