LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

In this lesson, I open up my archives to show you the reality of becoming a professional artist. We look at work ranging from my childhood attempts at oil painting to my portfolio pieces for CalArts and Pixar. You will see the direct evolution of my skills, starting with rigid academic studies and cross-hatching, moving into structural figure drawing, and finally arriving at stylized tonal gestures.

I break down the specific exercises that helped me improve, such as long-pose life drawing and experimenting with negative space in watercolor. You get to see the mistakes I made and how my teachers corrected them. This lesson proves that expertise comes from trusting the process, archiving your work, and constantly pushing out of your comfort zone.

It is incredibly humbling to look back at your earliest drawings. I am opening up my archives to show the long road from copying postcards as a kid to mastering academic cross hatching and finding a style at CalArts. Trusting the process and keeping your old work is the only way to truly see your evolution as an artist.
