ASSIGNMENTS
Your assignment in Chapter 01 is to take 100 photographs. I want you to not just take random photos, but rather to focus on storytelling. Give each shot a clear focal point. Look for compositional elements that can support your clear focal point, like leading lines, framing, repeating shapes. Also consider shot types when capturing humans... wide shots, mediums shots, closeups. You can consider connecting multiple images together to make simple stories. The goal with this exercise is to get experience with composing shots with intention and learn to recognize the tools that you can use to help your audience understand what they see in the images.
Also, choose some of your favorite films and study their shots types and geometric composition. If you can take screen shots and then write your thoughts about how they chose their camera angles, when they would cut, and how this helped tell the story, this will really help your understanding of visual storytelling
These lessons are very helpful! i've been focusing on my drawing-- almost always from these huge photo sets-- and am just now starting to want to create my own photo references. My *human* model threw his back out so I'm relying on my little squirrel as my protagonist for this morning
