Hello, this is my assignment for the shoulder muscles. I am really having a hard time understanding the flow / direction of the digits of the serratus anterior when the scapula is elevated and protracted as is the case with the last one I did (bottom right). I understand that they insert inside of the scapula along the medial ridge, but in an anatomical position the digits of the serratus has a fan like direction which makes it look like all of them insert at the bottom of the scapula which is not really the case. this is my attempt for the shoulder muscle. I hope i can get some feedbacks on these
Second slide:
First image: head is too big for the rest of the body
Second image: upper torso is to short compared toward the second half below
Solutions: incorporate better proportion techniques perhaps sight size, drawing more is also good
Overall your knowledge of anatomy looks comprehensive

Hi @Samuel Sanjaya, nice studies!
- The muscles seem to go to the right place most of the time👍. My main concern is the drawing as a whole. I would encourage you to first focus on getting the gesture and forms down, before developing the anatomical details. So you:
1. start with a lay-in that gets the gesture and proportions down
2. Then you describe the major forms
3. then you start to develop the anatomical details.
What's your art goal? What type of work do you want to create?
- In image 1, drawing to the bottom right, I think the teres minor might be inserting incorrectly. I think it should insert on the head of the humerus, next to the insertion of the infraspinatus (refer back to 3D Model: The Shoulder Muscles )

Hi @Lenserd martell , nice work!
- I think you might be making the scapula too small. The blade should be a little larger, and the acromion process more lateral.
- In some drawings you make the teres major too thin.

These angle are confusing me .. can any one show me the correct form in these angle ?
Hey everyone, here are my attempts for this assignement
Unfortunately, it seems I had the same issue shown at 10.45, I attached a majority of the digits to the bottom of the scapula.
As a result, I also failed at undestanding the strething of the digits
I'll come back to it and pay close attention to this
Another try to make the shoulder muscles individually visible. Meanwhile discovering more of Procreate. Any tips or critique is much appreciated.
So now it gets complicated… but here’s what I have until now. The image would help me a lot, I thought - but it was still difficult. Hope I got it right.
(The serratus is meant to insert inside the scapula, medial ridge)

- In the first drawing I would insert the infraspinatus and teres minor higher up (see paintover)

About your question:
By "anatomical position" do you mean the 3D model?
The 3D model has confused me too; especially the merging happening with the highest digits. When I look through Elliot Goldfingers anatomy book, the serratus fans out more evenly, with the digits pointing to different parts along the medial ridge and they don't merge like that at the top. If I take a guess, I think Goldfinger's diagram is more accurate. What do you think @Stan Prokopenko?

Hi Audrey!
Great work! You nail the insertions on the arm, the muscles have a nice sense of volume thanks to your cross contours and I really like how you wrap the serratus around the ribcage in the posterior views ( 1 & 3)
I´ll try to look for things you could improve:
- In #1 & #2 the serratus doesn´t insert correctly on the scapula. It should go along the medial ridge of the scapula all the way down to the lower point, where the 9th rib digit inserts. You seemed to fix that in the others, just wanted to point it out just in case...
- In #4 the infraspinatus feels a little flat. Try to draw the crosscountour lines in a way that shows more volume.
- The head seems to be a little small in all of your drawings
