Thank you for doing this demo, Mr Hampton :D It's actually nice that you approach digital tool almost like it's traditional. Even though I paint on procreate, yet I prefer note taking and sketching on paper; some instructors they teach with digital tool and use too much shorthands, making following along on paper very frustrating: they be bending and flipping their shapes on the fly while I have to erase and redraw the whole thing 😭. This way is more friendly to both digital and traditional learners :DDD. And it's like watching oil painting 🎨🖌️ And.... USING ONE BRUSH FOR EVERYTHING IS A FLEX 💪✨
LESSON NOTES

What's in Premium?

I will walk you through my complete process for rendering a figure from start to finish. I apply traditional oil painting techniques to digital art to build up solid forms. You will learn how to transition from a structural line drawing to shape and value massing. I explain how to control your edges to guide the viewer's eye. We focus on keeping the face as the sharp focal point while letting the peripheral areas blur out naturally.

You will also see how to set up a value scale to avoid muddy colors. I demonstrate how to add textures like metal armor and fabric folds over your established forms. You will learn how to balance analytical structure with observational painting to create a finished piece.

Wow, your process is very different from mine! I tend to do a lot more cartoony art, and use these really weird textured brushed for the rendering… lol. First I do my sketch, then go over it with lineart. Next, I do the colour blocks/flats, and then render with my funky brushes. I find it very fun and relaxing to do it this way, rather than trying to make it perfect. I can show you some of my leisure drawings if you want :)

Still working on a tendency to create too much detail away from focus. The ideas presented here are very helpful and I’ll keep them in mind. I also love the loose look in painting. In character design and illustration that’s almost anathema but for a painting, for me, it’s far more interesting.

Thanks, Josh. Ya, that's what I figured. I've never worked a day as an illustrator or character designer so it's good to see that confirmed here for others. Glad something in there was useful!
