A short 60 minute exercise to explore novelty in drawing.
ASSIGNMENTS
MINOR ASSIGNMENT 1
Throughout all of the minor assignments, I'll be working with images of masks that I've found to be interesting subjects. You are welcome to work from the same reference, or choose your own subject matter as outlined in the TODO sections of assignment 1. The key is to be consistent.
My favorite assignment that I've created of all time is the Ugly Truth assignment from Ideacraft. In the minor assignments, we'll build on this idea, introducing drawing from memory as a tool to shorten the time it takes to find what is interesting and novel in our drawing. Memory obscures things a good bit and keeps us from over-relying on always looking at a subject or reference.
This minor assignment has three parts. When possible, try a new medium with each minor project.
45 mins. Draw your subject accurately.
15 mins. Draw it again from memory without reference.
Review: Put the drawings side by side. What did you get correct? Which drawing do you prefer? Did you distort the drawing and is it more interesting because of that?
