Hi everyone, i am right now on the Mannequinization part but im still doing gesture drwing everyday,but i also still fell very like my gesture drawings are very poorly now on my 4th mounth of starting the course. i feel like my poses are stil very stiff, and i also have a tendenct to draw the same line multiple times which makes som prettt poorly line quality. would love some feedback, and would also love to hear if it normal for you guys to still fell like you suck at gesture even after you were half way through the course?? (sorry for my bad english lmao)

I think it is normal to feel like you still suck but I think that is really a show of improvement. And I think your gestures are looking well. What you mentioned about your gestures I can see as well. When it comes to line quality I would say you need to pay very close attention to each line you place, don't rush, try ghosting(which is running the pencil above the paper to figure out where you want the line without actually touching the paper). It takes time and I know I still need to improve at line quality as well but I think we can do it! On exaggeration I would agree your gestures do look a bit stiff, I think(and this is just an idea) if you REALLY exaggerated the poses, like almost to a breaking point, it could help you exaggerate your poses because it will show you how to be more fluid with the poses. I hope this was useful advice and if you have any more questions feel free to ask, I will do my best to give advice. I'm excited to see how you improve!

just go straight to the anatomy course and focus on it, it'll take round a year to master. gestures are good stuff but just for the general idea where your anatomical drawing will go, it shouldn't be smthing sophisticated. don't get too focused on gesture or u'll burn out before the real big challenge starts, go for anatomy and train it.

@johnlevi
your gesture is not that bad ,gesture is about the flow of the pose ✌️

A few things that I see: 1) somewhere along the line you got into the habit of multiple line drawing, so now you just do it without thinking about it. I do the same thing when I’m not thinking about it. This is one of those “practice makes permanent” things. Try “ghosting” your lines first, basically practicing them above the drawing prior to the actual pencil to paper moment. If that doesn’t work, go real light with “searching” lines then go back over what you like with a heavy “official” line. 2) I really like the method of doing one, following along with the demo, then trying it again myself. 3) instead of worrying about the whole gesture, spend a few minutes every day doing just arms, just legs, etc... until each limb flows well. Practice a single leg with one or two strokes over and over until you like what you see. Sometimes taking on the whole gesture can be too intimidating. hope it helps!

I don't think these are bad gestures, but there are two experiments you can try to see if you get a better result. 1. Exaggerate what you are seeing. Push the poses a little more than what you see in the model. Just a little bit of caricature can go a long way. 2. Throw in some wrapping lines, not just for volume, but to indicate if a limb is moving away from you or coming towards you. If you have a problem with wrapping lines, that's an indication that you might need to work more on form studies.

It's been two years since I started drawing and I still struggle with gestures. I think it's normal for most people who are not art geniuses. However, you've identified your weaknesses (which I agree with), now you just have to keep practicing to train you mind and hands to get those confident lines you want. The mannequinization classes will help greatly in gesture drawings. I would also suggest learning about human proportions and how the body moves (anatomy) however I don't think you're up to that part of the Proko courses yet. Your drawings are way better than mine when I was at 4 months. At least you have nice curvy lines, mine were so scratchy and unconfident you wouldn't believe it. If you want, I can attached a gesture drawing from one of my sketchbooks to show you where I am after two years of only watching free Proko stuff.
