I feel the same way about the impatience and then overcompensate by going too dark

First thing first, your "reflected light" have approximately the same value as your "light form shadow". Try to push the "reflected light" in a sligthly darker tone. Plus, your shadow is a little too low compared to the source of light. I suggest you to push it higher (approximately at the base of the pear).
