Asked for help
Hello! I fell out of things for a bit but I've been catching back up. Managed to do a small session of these. I get the idea, but my lines still always end up hairy and scratchy. I'm using my arm and making broad strokes, but I end up seeing the proportional errors and start trying to correct them and lose the flow. Any advice on how to keep the longer, flowy strokes going is very appreciated, especially when trying to add some detail back in or fix proportions. I wasn't focusing on that too hard, but some parts were so clearly off they jumped out at me.

Here's my go at the exercise! Tried with the Hierarchy of Importance to get the outline heavy and make things thicker toward the face on the inside for emphasis but never as thick as the outside.

I realize now my straights are barely visible oops. Also started skating on the light, medium, dark page before I started doing that instead and did more page skating on another page

I'm definitely glad to have more warmups! Would these work on digital as well? I find I'm much less steady on a digital surface as well, and don't want to feel too stuck relying on things like stabilizers. I'll be posting some exercises later once I'm out of the office as well hopefully!

Thanks a lot for this! It clarifies a lot for me as well. I think I might need to try and swing the level 2 projects going forward, maybe even this one if I have the time. I've dabbled and been learning things for awhile, but I don't find myself terribly great at a lot of it. I'm really happy to hear about character design things though. It's something I'm very excited about and what I'd love to do~

Here's my attempt at the three images. I tried to keep in mind things like doing the light lay in first from the previous lessons. I tried to keep my strokes simple and with some flow, though I feel like it feathers off too much in some places.

I have to sound like a big ol' dummy here, but the way to go about this would be something like ghosting the stroke in and just kinda gliding on the page for a moment before lifting off right? With some follow through? I just wanna make sure I have the idea right for what my hand is doing. haha

Did a couple of goes at this. First two images was before watching the demos and critique. Had a lot of trouble keeping to things and made a lot of feathery lines. Second two are after watching. Still some wobbles and feathery parts but way bigger strokes and I did a better lay in. The boots are night and day

Whoops I put this in the comments instead of here! But yes, did my best to just make big shapes of what I saw, with a little bit of trying to account for the bounce light. Was a bit scratchy though.

My first go at the level 1 exercise. Tried to catch a bit of the bounce light on the pear, lost a bit of the edge at the bottom with the single dark shadow value. Might want some less scratchy pencils too haha
