Hello, I'm fairly new. Just wanted to show off a little. Critiques appreciated, but not required ;) I did these pretty quickly (45min or less) on and off for a few weeks. Very relaxing - happy bald people in robes are a great subject. In order to hone in on gesture and composition rather than details, I kept them impressionistic. Done in various forms of charcoal. Thanks for looking! PS - one of them's actually a skateboarder that I messed up, so I made his legs into a robe.

Hey Elson, looks good. Before I give my opinion, can I ask how you feel about it? Are you proud of it? What was difficult?

May I ask: what do you think needs to be fixed about it? My opinion: It's very good! You nailed the shape of that vase. I think the leaves look nice. They're better than the reference. The heavy, complex shading makes the vase dark and irregular, in contrast to the glass in the reference which is smooth and translucent. I preferred the reference's clean look because the attractive silhouette of the vase stood out more.

I made a couple of "value study" of it using software, to show how I think lightening and simplifying the vase could improve it. I also cut out the cup in the second image, I think it makes the composition cleaner.

Hi, I noticed that some persons participate more than once. Can we do that or if we are supposed to present only 5 thumbnails for the whole challenge? Thank you for answering me.

This particular thread is for posting works in progress rather than submitting finals, if that's what you mean.

Hey! Newbie here. I saw the contest Friday night and started giving myself a crash course in landscapes the next morning. I've never painted so I decided to shmear charcoal around in the interest of producing something presentable. I do love color though, so I used these snazzy post-it notes. They're about the right size and I think the colors add mood. :) All comments appreciated!

Here are 7 attempts + photo references , I use only hard brush and try to simplify but... Anyway this was great to do this. And it's a good way to complete another challenge for me which is to draw/paint every single day during January :)

Definitely need more practice to get more fluid motion with less lines

Nice gestures. You've got some nice line quality. Regarding fluidity - it looks to me like you're keying in on the "bumps" of the model too much - try to focus on the larger rythm instead of the contours.

Whaddup Proko peers. I started 3 weeks ago and figured it was time to come out of the woodwork. tl;dr : Here's my homework!  I tried my best to make it legible - If it's hard to look at, please do complain. Overall, this was loads of fun and I'm excited to keep going. _____________________________________________________________________________ Long version: I've been self-teaching on and off for ~2 years now and just recently got serious. The first and second image's gestures were done during my first two weeks while following along with the assignement examples.  The third I did last week. I took about 6-8 minutes apiece, using my first couple beans to start. I included them to show off my progress (yay me!) and because I did them specifically to apply what I learned from lesson 1. (Plus, it just seemed like a waste to leave a perfectly good bean floating there 🤷) if I were to pick on myself: I'm messy and wasteful with line. As a result my drawings are noisy and up to interpretation in a bad way. If I were to praise myself: I'm starting to really get how to make things feel right and flow together. And when I do make a nice line, it's real nice.

Hey cecille, First off, good on you for posting your stuff! =) Second, I think you did a great job capturing the basic position, facing, and energy of the model in very few lines and with no mess. I especially like the expressive cross contour you used for the hips in some of these, such as the figure on bottom left of page 1. A good next step for you might be to improve on flow. Your gestures capture a great deal of information and character, but I think your short lines make them more disconnected and stiff than they could be. Try this: take the leg of the figure on page 2, bottom left - make the same shape as your two strokes, but continue the center line all the way down to the foot instead. I attached my own go at it if you wanna see what I mean. Thanks for reading and keep trucking ;)
