LESSON NOTES
Drawing complex vehicles like airplanes gets a lot easier when you break them down into simple shapes. In this lesson, we look at how to sketch a plane using both one-point and two-point perspective. You will see how shifting your vanishing points changes the dynamic of the drawing and how to use basic boxes to keep your proportions accurate.
We also cover how to anchor your plane to the ground with cast shadows and how to apply perspective to surrounding elements like hangars and clouds. Remember that this is about studying the form in your sketchbook, so focus on understanding the structure rather than making a perfectly clean drawing.

This is my follow along study of the video. Yes, there are obvious mistakes, but this has been a learning curve indeed. I really like using the ball point pen as there is really no way to erase. Once it’s there, it’s there pretty much to stay. Notice the propeller on the foreground plane, the middle propeller is doubled for a correction attempt. Also, the wing on the foreground plane is out of whack. 😁🤷♂️ All said and done, I am really pleased with the way this has turned out. Critiques are welcome.

Hey Max! Thanks for submitting your drawing! I agree, working in ballpoint can be quite tricky for that reason; try doing some of these exercises in pencil as well, where you can erase and rehash stuff first. This might give you some confidence in making sure you're doing them correctly, which you'll be able to then translate to ballpoint. Wish you luck!
