The third assignment!

I'm really enjoying these studies. Being able to edit them using the ideas you've been teaching in the videos is really helping me simplify and understand drapery much better.

I am mostly struggling at trying to match the information with what i am seeing

Hmm... While I'm definitely getting a better sense of how to decode the chaos of fabric (and seeing the value in making deliberate simplifying design choices to communicate the underlying forms) I can't help but feel like these are missing something. Maybe I just need more practice, but another pair of eyes might catch something I'm not seeing. Any criticism is always welcome!

Painting this stuff surely takes a lot of time. I hope i was able to capture the form of the folds

Submissions for the assignment! These are fun I want to learn to shade my drapery in the future so im trying to understand the contours and plane changes but boy oh boy it's so difficult for some reason. Resisting the temptation to draw every single fold has also been challenging, they sing to me like a siren's song but if I listen my drawing ends up a veritable mess.

-here’s my assignment. It was hard to keep from straying from the folds we were supposed to focus on. But I’m finding it easier to draw folds with line work and not getting too distracted by the shadows. ,

I cant describe how much i am enjoying the process. Halflocks are pretty challenging tbh.

Here is my assignment. I found difficult "to see" the folds forms and consequently to apply them to my work; I think I can't grasp a mental schema to use to identify the folds shapes.

Stiff parts of a garment that flare out like a tent or a baloon (such as starched sleeves) are really confusing to me. I'm not sure how to identify the folds in those areas. Do stiff forms just generate their own tension points (in the spots where there's no seams, pinches etc.), and for example the diaper fold appears between two protruding forms? Now I see - too late, as always - that in the third picture I somehow lost the nice S curvature that show the spiral folds around her waist (I mean, I drew two lines in the right place, but they look rather stiff). I'll have to live with it; this pencil is practically impossible to erase.

While doing the assignments, I found shading a little bit helpful for illustrating certain types of folds and plane changes, though I'm not very good at it yet. But I believe that as I keep learning, I’ll pick up better tips and tricks on shading drapery.

Help!! I am having a hard time making my folds “finished’. I start with a gesture for the fold and then have a really hard time finishing the garment realistically. I might like how it looks in drawing but once I get to painting all those unfinished gestural folds really hurt me and just run the project astray.

busy weekend coming up but managed to do a couple before the weekend. Will hopefully find some time Tuesday for more to make it in time for the critique video. Definitely struggling with how to best represent the half-lock folds. Might have to rewatch that video once more or look for some extra examples.
